Rivals like Samsung and OnePlus offer easy theming tools with deep personalization options, but on Pixel, your icon options are primarily limited to Material You’s dynamic colors. That’s finally changing with today’s Pixel Drop, though it might not be exactly what you’ve been wanting from Google.

Most Tensor-powered Pixels — that’s Pixel 6 and later — are getting new custom icon support starting with today’s Pixel Drop, but rather than allowing for third-party icon packs, Google’s chosen to head down the genAI route instead. These styles include the two you can see above, including a rainbow-themed playful 3D look named Cookies complete with wallpaper-matching backdrops and all-gold icons fittingly called Treasure centered on white circles. Other options include Scribbles, Easel, and Stardust.

We’ve known these AI-generated icon packs have been coming for a while, thanks to early indicators in Android Canary last summer and some changes to the language surrounding app icons in Google’s Developer Distribution Agreement. However, if you had any hope that the Pixel launcher might also add support for the thousands of third-party icon packs lining the Play Store, unfortunately, that option does not appear to be available judging by today’s announcement. While it’s obvious Google is much more willing to embrace personalization on Pixel, it appears that the company still wants its users to customize on its own terms — and right now, those terms are pretty much exclusively centered around AI.

With today’s Pixel Drop, the company is also introducing its second theme pack. Following last year’s Wicked: For Good launch, Google’s turning to SpongeBob with a collection of wallpapers, ringtones, icons, saved GIFs, and more. It includes three unique themes that will be available through the beginning of May.

Advertisement – scroll for more content

These custom AI-generated icons are coming to all devices from the Pixel 6 on, with the exception of the Pixel Tablet. Google says these SpongeBob icon packs are also coming to “phones” from the Pixel 6 onwards, though it’s unclear if the Pixel Tablet is also excluded from this update.

FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. More.

If there’s one big complaint about Google’s Pixel UI experience, it’s the lack of customization.
