{"id":513344,"date":"2026-03-04T08:07:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T08:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/513344\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T08:07:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T08:07:08","slug":"the-average-401k-balance-grew-11-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/513344\/","title":{"rendered":"The average 401(k) balance grew 11% in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmm9ob2z7000x27p3g7iv58os@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anyone watching the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/03\/investing\/us-stocks-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stock market\u2019s response<\/a> to world events this week may be feeling a little uncertain about their investments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn00063b6rk1mp53l4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But if last year taught investors anything, it\u2019s that volatility and dramatic drops in stocks from one day to the next are not reliable indicators of annual portfolio performance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn00073b6rca75luvc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite extreme market volatility last year \u2013 especially in the spring of 2025 \u2013 the average 401(k) balance rose by 11% to $146,100, according to new data from Fidelity Investments, which analyzed nearly 25 million accounts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn00083b6rgu1welek@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It marks the third consecutive year that the average corporate workplace retirement account booked a double-digit percentage gain. That\u2019s thanks not only to overall market performance but consistent savings habits by 401(k) participants, Fidelity noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn00093b6rmk9rql8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The S&amp;P 500, for instance, ended last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/31\/investing\/year-gains-us-stock-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">up 16.39%<\/a> while the Nasdaq rose more than 20%. The S&amp;P Aggregate Bond Index was up 2.91%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000a3b6rni465bwo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the average savings rate by participants was 14.2%, which was about the same as the prior year. That includes the average employee contribution rate (9.5% of their gross income) plus the average employer match (4.7%).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000c3b6r5r8p05ap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of course, the average balance of $146,000 across all age groups saving for retirement isn\u2019t that high.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000d3b6ryuembmii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it is considerably \ufeffabove the median balance of $34,400. The median, of course, is the midpoint below which half of all account balances are lower. This particular stat is across all 401(k) participants, regardless of age and time spent saving, among other factors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000e3b6rr1damram@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The results are better if you look at accounts where participants have been saving for at least 15 years. Their median balance was $377,700.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000f3b6rkpqno03q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the highest end of the balance spectrum, 665,000 accounts ended last year with balances of $1 million or more, up from 537,000 in 2024. Per Fidelity, among the $1 million-plus accounts, participants had been saving an average of 25 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000g3b6r1mhbdxaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That may be one reason why the majority of the million-dollar-plus accounts (60.3%) belong to Gen Xers \u2013 who were born between 1965 and 1980 and are next in line to retire. (Millennials\u2019 accounts, by contrast, make up 4.1% of the million-dollar-plus club.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000h3b6r9hwpp3qv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            How Gen Xers as a whole are doing, however, is a mixed bag. On the one hand, they saved an average of 15.4% of their gross income last year. That includes a tenth of the cohort who were making catch-up contributions, Fidelity said. (Anyone 50 or older last year was allowed to save an additional $7,500 on top of the $23,500 federal contribution limit \u2013 while those between the ages of 60 and 63 were given a higher catch-up limit of $11,250.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000k3b6rapesr8db@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But such catch-up contributions may be needed for far more Gen Xers, since their median 401(k) account balance was just $67,100. While some Gen Xers may still have a defined benefit pension coming to them, most won\u2019t. They entered the workforce just as employers were starting to switch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/21\/investing\/gen-x-retirement-savings\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">away from company pensions<\/a> in favor of self-directed 401(k)s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000m3b6rh5fe5cdq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In honor of Women\u2019s History Month, Fidelity broke out some data pertaining to women participating in 401(k) plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaw43dn000n3b6rvf4rw1wr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their average 401(k) balance \u2013 $119,500 \u2013 was up 22% over the past five years \u2013 better than the 20% increase across all participant accounts during the same period.
