{"id":513615,"date":"2026-03-04T11:27:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T11:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/513615\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T11:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T11:27:08","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/513615\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global equities were mixed as \u200bmarkets took a breather \u200cafter a global equities rout on \u2060concerns \u200babout a widened and prolonged conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures pointed higher as investors awaited a fresh slate of economic data for cues on the interest rate outlook, while surging oil prices added to inflation pressures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures advanced as commodity prices climbed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from Athabasca Oil Corp., Capital Power Corp., George Weston Ltd., Kinaxis Inc., Linamar Corp., and Vermilion Energy Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Broadcom Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said he\u2019d been surprised at markets\u2019 \u201cbenign\u201d reaction up to now to the building risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI think it\u2019s gonna take a couple of \u200bweeks for markets to really digest the implications of what has happened \u2060both in the short term and medium term, and I can\u2019t speculate as to how that would \u2060play out,\u201d he said in a speech in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 1.45 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 advanced 0.74 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX rose 1.69 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gained 1.21 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 3.61 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng fell 2.01 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices rose as the U.S.-Israeli war \u200bon Iran disrupted Middle East supplies, but the \u200cpace of gains slowed from past sessions after President Donald Trump said the U.S. Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/industry-news\/energy-and-resources\/article-markets-calmer-after-trump-vows-to-protect-oil-and-gas-ships-at-the\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/industry-news\/energy-and-resources\/article-markets-calmer-after-trump-vows-to-protect-oil-and-gas-ships-at-the\/\">could escort vessels<\/a> through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent climbed 1.5 per cent to US$82.64 a barrel after closing yesterday at its highest since January, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude advanced 0.8 per cent to US$75.16, after settling at its highest since June. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe primary near-term driver for oil prices remains \u200bthe US-Iran conflict,\u201d said OANDA senior market analyst Kelvin Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAt \u200cthis stage, only clear signs of de-escalation could mitigate or reverse the current bullish trend for WTI, and such signals are currently lacking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold gained 1.8 per cent to US$5,175.39 an ounce. U.S. gold futures for April delivery added 1.2 per cent to trade at US$5,186.90.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.98 US cents to 73.27 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 0.02 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, dropped 0.19 per cent to 98.86. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro gained 0.22 per cent to US$1.1639. The British pound rose 0.17 per cent to US$1.3382. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.080 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">China\u2019s PMI<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japan and Euro zone\u2019s services and composite PMI<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:15 a.m. ET: U.S. ADP National Employment Report for February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canadian labour productivity for Q4.
