Calgary and Edmonton have submitted a joint bid to host games during the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday, according to NHL.com.<\/p>\n

NHL.com<\/a> reported Bettman toured the construction site of Calgary\u2019s new arena Tuesday with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and Calgary Flames ownership before speaking with media at the Scotiabank Saddledome.<\/p>\n

NHL.com also reported host cities for the tournament have not yet been finalized, but a decision could be announced in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

The NHL says the World Cup of Hockey will be held in February 2028, with games planned in North America and Europe. Host locations are to be determined through a host city bid process, the league says.<\/p>\n

If selected, Calgary would host games at the Flames\u2019 future home arena, Scotia Place, which is under construction and scheduled to open in the fall of 2027.<\/p>\n

A February construction update says installation of the precast concrete seating bowl is underway inside the main event space. The update also cites continued concrete work on parkade walls and the main concourse, along with progress on structural steel for the upper deck.<\/p>\n

According to project information for Scotia Place, site preparation included relocating 5 Street S.E. to the east and building 5A Street S.E., with excavation beginning after a ground-breaking and design reveal in July 2024.<\/p>\n

Construction on the foundation began in January 2025, according to the project description.<\/p>\n
