Surrey mayoral candidate Mike Starchuk announced today his campaign would reshape Surrey\u2019s civic identity by recognizing local figures who have contributed to the city\u2019s growth and reputation.<\/p>\n

Starchuk, who is leading the Imagine Surrey civic party<\/a>, unveiled what he calls a \u201cCity of Champions\u201d pledge aimed at celebrating community members who have made significant impacts across sports, education, public service, and other fields.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Surrey grows into British Columbia\u2019s largest city, our identity should reflect the best of who we are,\u201d said Starchuk in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why Imagine Surrey is pledging to make Surrey the City of Champions \u2014 by honouring the community builders, humanitarians, innovators, educators, first responders, athletes, and everyday heroes who unite us and inspire the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under this campaign promise, the Surrey\u2019s municipal government\u2019s current tagline \u2014 \u201cThe Future Lives Here\u201d \u2014 would be replaced with \u201cCity of Champions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naming streets, parks, and infrastructure after Surrey\u2019s difference makers<\/p>\n

The initiative would also include naming public parks, roads, civic spaces, and major infrastructure after notable residents and community leaders.<\/p>\n

Additional plans involve installing murals, monuments, and public art that highlight the stories of people who helped shape Surrey. Storytelling displays in civic buildings and community centres would also be used to showcase their contributions.<\/p>\n

Starchuk pointed to several individuals as examples of the type of community achievements the initiative would highlight, including Olympic gold medalist Daniel Igali, the late renowned architect Bing Thom, and veteran Zennosuke Inouye.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is about lifting Surrey up and building a city identity that reflects who we really are: a city of champions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to Starchuk, the proposal is part of a broader campaign vision focused on strengthening civic pride and highlighting Surrey\u2019s community-driven accomplishments. He said additional policy announcements and projects tied to the City\u2019s identity will be rolled out in the coming months.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurrey\u2019s best days are ahead,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re ready to lead with pride, deliver results, and build a city that matches its momentum. It all starts with celebrating our people and their achievements, not politicians for political purposes\u2026 whatever those purposes may be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starchuk is a former Surrey city councillor and former BC NDP MLA for the riding of Surrey-Cloverdale. Ahead of the October 2026 civic election, he recently launched the Imagine Surrey party. Earlier this winter, the party also announced their first four candidates for Surrey City Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Imagine Surrey\u2019s candidates previously stated there is currently too much infighting in City Council, and that the municipal government\u2019s response to the transnational extortion crisis has been \u201clate and mishandled.\u201d<\/p>\n
