The city is looking for a creator to bring a hanging piece of art to the new $43 million Victoria Park Arena and the upgraded Sports Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

Plans for the new Victoria Park Arena, which will replace the old facility demolished in 2021, include a new Brampton Sports Hall of Fame to honour the athletes, coaches and advocate groups that call Brampton home.<\/p>\n

Construction on the $43-million facility started early last year, and the city is now calling on artists, collectives and creators to submit pitches for \u201ca dynamic\u201d piece of public art \u201cthat will celebrate the rich history of sport in Brampton.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chosen art piece will be installed near the main doors of the arena, hung from a reinforced ceiling structure, with rings designed by architects used to mount and secure the suspended piece.<\/p>\n

The total budget for the Victoria Park Arena public art project is $90,000, including HST and all the costs associated with the successful application.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the nature of the project, the selected artist will be expected to work collaboratively with the project team on the technical development of the artwork concept and integration into the overall construction design,\u201d the city says.<\/p>\n

The selection process will be a two-stage provincial competition, open to professional artists based in Ontario. A panel will review all submissions and by June to identify a shortlist of up to three finalists, who will be invited to develop a design proposal.<\/p>\n

Shortlisted artists will be paid a fee of $1,500 plus HST.<\/p>\n

Submissions must be received on or before April 20 at 2 p.m., and are open to professional artists and artist-led teams. Applications must include an outline artistic experience, approach, and interest in the project, images to act as visual support material, a support material list and references.<\/p>\n

Currently located at the CAA Centre and now in its 45th year, the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame is a tribute to local athletes, coaches and trailblazers who have made significant contributions to sports, like former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe and Ken Giles, a sports reporter and the namesake of a Brampton Recreation Centre.<\/p>\n

A report in 2024 showed the price tag for the arena and new Sports Hall of Fame jumped by more than 50 per cent to a total of $43.3 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The city put out a request for bids from builders and received six proposals from interested parties, but even the lowest eligible bid \u201cexceeded the approved budget,\u201d leading staff to request a budget amendment of $14,650,000 in additional funding \u201cto award the construction contract.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old 35,500 square-foot Victoria Park Arena at 20 Victoria Cres. in Brampton was built in 1967, and it cost the city more than $17 million to tear down the building after years of the building sitting empty.<\/p>\n

Fire tore through the old arena in 2016 leading to the closure of the facility that was once home to junior hockey and lacrosse teams in Brampton.<\/p>\n
