{"id":51677,"date":"2025-08-07T09:14:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/51677\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T09:14:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:14:10","slug":"andrey-rublev-slams-the-conditions-in-toronto-after-losing-to-taylor-fritz-there-is-no-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/51677\/","title":{"rendered":"Andrey Rublev slams the conditions in Toronto after losing to Taylor Fritz, &#8216;there is no tennis&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A losing finalist in 2024, Andrey Rublev was hoping for another crack at the Canadian Open title in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian number one began his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/canadian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Open<\/a> campaign against Hugo Gaston in the second round, who he defeated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>He was made to work much harder in his next match, however, as Italy\u2019s Lorenzo Sonego pushed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/andrey-rublev\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rublev<\/a> close before losing out in three sets.<\/p>\n<p>Another three-setter followed in the fourth round, when Rublev advanced past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/alejandro-davidovich-fokina\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alejandro Davidovich Fokina<\/a> when the Spaniard retired injured down 0-3 in the final set.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2228391642-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Andrey Rublev celebrates during his win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the 2025 Canadian Open\" class=\"wp-image-118116\" \/>Photo by Matthew Stockman\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Rublev, it was in the quarterfinals that his run came to an end, losing out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/taylor-fritz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Fritz<\/a> in straight sets, 3-6, 6-7.<\/p>\n<p>Frustrated with the defeat, Rublev slammed the court conditions in Toronto during his post-match press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Andrey Rublev says there is \u2018not much tennis\u2019 being played in Toronto due to the conditions<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the media after his quarterfinal defeat, Rublev shared his thoughts on the conditions at the Canadian Open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have much to say. Here, the game is very simple, it\u2019s only serve and the guy who just put more returns, because with these conditions, there is not much tennis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere it\u2019s tough to serve against. Here, there is no tennis at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s the same conditions for every player. It\u2019s also the same, yeah, for everyone. We\u2019re all in the same conditions, and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/andrey-rublev-explains-what-was-so-unusual-about-daniil-medvedevs-latest-match-at-the-canadian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rublev had already shared his thoughts on the conditions<\/a> earlier in the tournament, suggesting he wasn\u2019t a fan of the quicker courts used in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the match itself, Rublev gave credit to his opponent, who served \u2018unbelievably\u2019 well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaylor [Fritz] served unbelievably and had a good return,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the second set, I played one bad game at four-all, and the same happened to him; he played one bad game.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2227997870-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Andrey Rublev reacts during his defeat to Taylor Fritz in the 2025 Canadian Open quarterfinals\" class=\"wp-image-118106\" \/>Photo by Mert Alper Dervis\/Anadolu via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was serving and he broke me, he was super focused. Then the same happened to him. When I broke him, he didn\u2019t play well, and I was super focused, and I was able to break him. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tiebreak was unlucky. I had three forehands to go for the shot, and I missed them, so not much to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rublev was then asked to assess Fritz\u2019s level, as the American prepares to play his seventh career Masters 1000 semifinal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s one of the best players. He gets great results. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wimbledon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a> semifinal, great match against [Carlos] Alcaraz.
