{"id":517220,"date":"2026-03-06T02:41:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T02:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/517220\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T02:41:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T02:41:22","slug":"domestic-economy-grew-by-almost-5-last-year-but-harris-says-gulf-crisis-could-raise-prices-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/517220\/","title":{"rendered":"Domestic economy grew by almost 5% last year, but Harris says Gulf crisis could raise prices \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The domestic economy grew by almost 5 per cent last year, buoyed by personal spending growth on goods and services, data from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\"> Central Statistics Office (CSO)<\/a> shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The agency\u2019s quarterly national accounts, published on Thursday, show modified domestic demand (MDD) grew by 4.9 per cent in the year and by 1 per cent in the quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">MDD is a measure of underlying domestic activity in the economy that covers personal, government and investment spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CSO data also shows gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 12.3 per cent in the year, but the metric is not regarded as a reliable gauge of economic growth here because it is distorted by foreign multinationals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The data shows domestic sectors were up 0.9 per cent in 2025, while sectors dominated by multinationals increased by 25.1 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Personal spending on goods and services, a key measure of domestic economic activity, grew by 2.9 per cent in the year and by 0.9 per cent in the quarter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>How the conflict in the Middle East is already affecting Irish consumers<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The CSO said it was updating its estimated GDP figure for the final quarter of 2025 from a previous deficit of 0.6 per cent to a deficit of 3.8 per cent. It said this was driven by \u201cthe globalised sectors of the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, there was continued growth in the domestic economy in the quarter. MDD and wages both grew by 1 per cent while personal spending increased by 0.9 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Finance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Simon Harris <\/a>welcomed the data, but said the conflict in the Middle East could lead to another jump in prices for consumers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI am encouraged that consumer spending grew by a solid 3 per cent last year,\u201d he said. \u201cThis reflects rising real incomes and the strength of our labour market, with a record 2.83 million people in employment at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEncouragingly, building and construction investment also recorded robust growth, up 9 per cent last year reflecting the solid momentum in the residential sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile today\u2019s figures are positive and reflect the resilience of the Irish economy, we cannot become complacent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/03\/03\/lengthy-iran-war-could-cause-inflation-spike-warns-ecbs-top-economist-philip-lane\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lengthy Iran war could cause inflation \u2018spike\u2019, warns ECB\u2019s top economist Philip LaneOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIndeed, recent developments clearly illustrate that uncertainty is likely to be a feature of the economic landscape for some time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe conflict in the Middle East is potentially a significant headwind to global growth and risk to the inflation outlook. The impact on commodity prices will, of course, hinge on the duration and extent of the disruption in supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Thomas Pugh, economist at audit, tax and consulting firm RSM UK and Ireland, said the 3.8 per cent contraction in GDP in the last quarter of the year was \u201cjust noise\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe domestic economy still grew by 1 per cent and grew almost 5 per cent in 2025 as a whole,\u201d he said. \u201cIn any case, the far bigger question now is whether the recent rise in energy prices lasts, which would push up inflation and dampen growth \u2013 if sustained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland imports almost 80 per cent of its energy from abroad making it particularly exposed to rising wholesale prices. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Pugh said higher oil prices would probably add around 0.2 percentage points to inflation in the coming months.
