Quickie blog with the NHL\u2019s trade deadline less than 24 hours away:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Toronto is all about adding assets. Young players, prospects, picks. You name it, they want to hear about it. There aren\u2019t a ton in the system, so they want to accumulate. Then, they can start figuring out their future \u2014 maybe use what they get to chase bigger fish.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The chances of Auston Matthews<\/a> getting traded now are equal to John Blutarsky\u2019s grade-point average. William Nylander<\/a> and John Tavares<\/a> aren\u2019t going anywhere. I heard some Matthew Knies<\/a>, and that, to me, is the Maple Leafs seeing if there\u2019s a massive offer they can\u2019t turn down. That is the only way I see it happening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 If not a first for Bobby McMann<\/a> (and contenders are running out of them to trade), then Toronto would consider two seconds, which is what Vancouver got for Kiefer Sherwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Prior to trading for Nicolas Roy<\/a>, Colorado and Calgary did discuss Nazem Kadri<\/a>. I have to assume the same picks Toronto received (a first and a fifth) were available, and there was an understanding of some level of retention. Never got over the finish line.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 Kadri has stuck to his no-trade list, so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 One of Thursday’s bigger stories was Colton Parayko<\/a> declining to waive his no-trade for Buffalo. That\u2019s his right. Blues GM Doug Armstrong spoke to his leadership group; told them he\u2019s trying to make changes. He let them know they might be asked, so they\u2019d be mentally prepared. It\u2019s hard to know exactly \u2014 there are always semantics \u2014 but I do not believe Parayko\u2019s trade is the only one that has been vetoed. That, or players have indicated there are certain teams they will not go to. But the Blues have not given up, and continue to work at things \u2014 including Jordan Binnington<\/a>, Justin Faulk<\/a> and Jordan Kyrou<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 I believed Utah was the best match for Robert Thomas<\/a>, but so far they have balked at the ask. It\u2019s poker. Detroit is believed to be in there, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 Detroit was also involved in conversations about Vincent Trocheck<\/a>, as is Carolina. (There are always teams I don\u2019t see coming.)<\/p>\n

\u2022 I am not expecting the Mammoth to trade Nick Schmaltz<\/a>. I\u2019ve heard there\u2019s been positive movement in contract negotiations, and chances are dropping he reaches free agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 New Jersey made all defencemen available besides Luke Hughes<\/a> and Brett Pesce<\/a>. Simon Nemec<\/a> switched agents, always a bad sign for an incumbent. That\u2019s one reason he\u2019s out there.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Ryan O\u2019Reilly continues to express his desire to stay in Nashville. (He has a verbal no move.) As of earlier Thursday, it was quiet around Steven Stamkos<\/a> \u2014 although I am terrified of absolute proclamations around this time. I do believe there are serious efforts to find Jonathan Marchessault<\/a> a new home.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vegas is always a stealth team, but another one could be Anaheim. Ducks are interested in wingers, for sure.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Seattle has interest in Florida\u2019s Mackie Samoskevich<\/a>. Good young player, but Panthers will make them pay a high price. Shane Wright wouldn\u2019t move in that trade, but they continue to discuss him for either an elite scorer or a younger talent that needs a change. (Just me, but does Wright for Kent Johnson make any sense?
