(Adrian Wyld\/The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n<p>Hovering over the talks: U.S. threats to impose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/trump-tariffs-supreme-court-analysis-9.7099838\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new tariffs<\/a> to replace the ones struck down two weeks ago by the U.S. Supreme Court, to break up CUSMA into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/trump-trade-us-canada-mexico-cusma-usmca-jamieson-greer-9.7010300\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">separate deals<\/a> with Canada and Mexico, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/trump-tariffs-canada-us-mexico-agreement-cusma-usmca-trade-9.7004814\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terminate the agreement<\/a> \u2014 a move that could expose all Canadian exports to Trump&#8217;s blanket tariffs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/trump-tariffs-canada-trade-deal-jamieson-greer-interview-9.7104990\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tariffs will be part<\/a> of whatever trade deal is negotiated with Canada, Greer told the CBC&#8217;s Katie Simpson last month on the night of Trump&#8217;s state of the union address.<\/p>\n<p>New talks a &#8216;very positive sign&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Despite that, the fact that Greer and LeBlanc are now holding face-to-face talks is significant, said Eric Miller, a Canada-U.S. trade expert and president of Rideau Potomac Strategy Group, a Washington-based consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is something which I think is a very positive sign,&#8221;
