The national energy corridor agreement announced today by the Ontario government is a win for affordability, jobs and the fight against climate change, the David Suzuki Foundation said.<\/p>\n
The agreement \u2014 signed by Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and Yukon \u2014 focuses on partnerships and new electricity connections between these provinces and territories, while calling for financial support and collaboration from the federal government on projects and planning.<\/p>\n
In response to the announcement, Stephen Thomas, David Suzuki Foundation clean energy manager, said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe David Suzuki Foundation welcomes today\u2019s announcement from the 10 participating provinces and territories. This focus on upgrading Canada\u2019s electricity grid while increasing collaboration is exactly what we need to see right now from all levels of government when it comes to affordable, reliable, clean electricity.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuilding new electricity lines between regions in Canada will bring down the cost of energy for households, create tens of thousands of good paying jobs and lessen our dependence on the United States as an energy partner while showing up for workers in hard-hit sectors like aluminum and steel. Indigenous ownership is integral to the reliable and affordable clean electricity that people in Canada need and deserve, and it\u2019s encouraging to see those partnerships prioritized in this announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re anticipating the federal government to announce a national electricity strategy soon and today\u2019s announcement gives them a great blueprint to build on.
