Yesterday, we reported on an ongoing controversy in the Helldivers community. The so-called Dev D10 challenge, or D10 charity challenge, was proposed by a fan last week, calling on the devs to play through the planet of Oshaune on Helldivers 2‘s hardest difficulty. If they completed it, the fan said he would donate $1,000 to a charity of their choice, and others came forward to raise this amount even more.

However, what could have been a great moment for the community devolved into claims of doxxing and abuse. The organiser said that it had gotten so bad that the charity he volunteers at was being dragged into it as well, with online trolls targeting his offline life. Eventually, Arrowhead made a plea to its playerbase, speaking out against this behaviour, and revealing that it and Sony will be monitoring the situation.

Now, it looks like we have an update, and if accurate, things have only gone from bad to worse. According to those on the Helldivers subreddit where all of this began, the organiser is replying to those who tried to reach out to him. The message informs them that the doxxing has resulted in him losing his job of seven years, and being removed from the horse sanctuary he volunteered at for 15 years.

It Looks Like The Helldivers D10 Situation Has Gotten Even Worse

All of this information comes from a message that is being shared around the Helldivers community, allegedly sent by the organiser. Now, we can’t independently verify this, but there are users in different subreddits saying that they got the message (such as this one from r/HelldiversUnfiltered), which lines up with the message stating that it would be sent to anyone who reached out in support of him while he was dealing with the abuse.

“I’ve been banned from the horse sanctuary I’ve been volunteering [at] since 2011 for security reasons (which is understandable, they are just trying to get by and they can’t deal with this) and fired from my job at the electrical company after 7 years,” the message reads. “My life got basically ruined overnight for something that I thought would be fun and productive toward a game I loved and supported passionately.

“I’ll be stepping away from the community, reddit and the videogame as a whole,” it continues. “I’m completely and undoubtedly done.”

The community is, for the most part, outraged that it was taken this far. Fingers are being pointed in all directions, with some saying this is just a case of online assholes doing what they do best, and others pinning the actions on fans who cannot handle any criticism of Helldivers 2 – since the challenge was started as a complaint that Oshaune on D10 is unbalanced. Others say that the community managers and moderators should have steppedin sooner or done more to protect the organiser.

With so many claims being made, it is hard to say who is at fault – besides those who carried out the abuse, of course. Arrowhead and Sony are yet to comment on this latest development.
