{"id":521614,"date":"2026-03-08T02:01:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T02:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/521614\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T02:01:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T02:01:11","slug":"eduardo-longos-casa-bola-forms-setting-for-aberto-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/521614\/","title":{"rendered":"Eduardo Longo&#8217;s Casa Bola forms setting for Aberto exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brazilian design exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/admin.dezeen.com\/tag\/aberto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aberto<\/a> is hosting its fifth edition in Casa Bola, architect Eduardo Longo&#8217;s globular<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/self-build\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> self-built<\/a> 1970s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sao-paulo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a> home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aberto.art\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aberto\/05<\/a> is the fifth iteration of the platform&#8217;s art and design show, which has been staged in a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/modernism\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">modernist<\/a> buildings, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/05\/25\/aberto-exhibition-maison-la-roche-le-corbusier-brazil\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le Corbusier&#8217;s Maison La Roche<\/a> in Paris.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303451 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/aberto-5-casa-bola-sao-paulo-brazil-exhibition_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Casa Bola\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Aberto is hosting its fifth edition in Eduardo Longo&#8217;s 1979-designed Casa Bola<\/p>\n<p>This year, the exhibition features installations, sculpture and painting by 50 creatives housed within the 1979 Casa Bola, which demonstrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eduardolongo.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Longo<\/a>&#8216;s utopian architectural vision for an urban community, where residents would live in pods suspended above the street.<\/p>\n<p>The building stands out on S\u00e3o Paulo&#8217;s bustling Faria Lima for its spherical ferrocement facade, positioned above three floors of separate gallery-style subterranean spaces that still serve as Longo&#8217;s home and office today. A bright-yellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/slides\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slide<\/a> snakes around the sphere as an alternative to the winding staircase.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303452 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/aberto-5-casa-bola-sao-paulo-brazil-exhibition_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Bright yellow slide around Casa Bola\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A bright yellow slide snakes around the building&#8217;s spherical volume<\/p>\n<p>Among the pieces is a striking aluminium curtain by Spanish artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielsteegmann.info\/?utm_source=ig&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=link_in_bio&amp;fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQMMjU2MjgxMDQwNTU4AAGnNl_e718gSHBiL_PpB8-rY7ZHWwzKnV-ZTV2deucmF0SgPdpDbOl78FxMC_Y_aem_x64oUAwT1tEljoy8_gWb1A\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Steegmann Mangran\u00e9<\/a>, positioned at the entrance of one of the floors.<\/p>\n<p>Characterised by a playfully cut-out coated-steel frame, the curtain was one of many works created specifically for Casa Bola.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303453 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/aberto-5-casa-bola-sao-paulo-brazil-exhibition_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Steegmann Mangran\u00e9 aluminium curtain\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Daniel Steegmann Mangran\u00e9 designed a decorative aluminium curtain for the exhibition<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pieces developed for the exhibition establish a direct dialogue not only with the spherical form of the house, but also with its materiality, its lightness of tone and the sense of humour that is so characteristic of Eduardo&#8217;s architecture,&#8221; Aberto founder and curator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/filipeaassis\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Filipe Assis<\/a> told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sandracinto_oficial\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandra Cinto<\/a> painted two works for the home, which Assis described as perfectly complementary to Casa Bola&#8217;s &#8220;spaceship vibes&#8221;, while German-Brazilian artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/janainatschape\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Janaina Tschape<\/a> also produced a large-scale mural for the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303457 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/aberto-5-casa-bola-sao-paulo-brazil-exhibition_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Janaina Tschape mural\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Janaina Tschape also produced a large-scale mural for the exhibition<\/p>\n<p>While most of the pieces are displayed below the building&#8217;s spherical volume, works are also on show in this space.<\/p>\n<p>Multimedia paintings by artists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lais__amaral\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La\u00eds Amaral<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/palomabosque\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paloma Bosqu\u00ea<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tt.chlhb\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tatiana Chalhoub<\/a> were hung to &#8220;engage in the building&#8217;s curves and angles&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/01\/29\/triptyque-sao-paulo-brazil-inspira-sp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/inspira-sp-building-sao-paulo-brazil-triptyque_dezeen_2364_sq-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Inspira SP\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Triptyque wraps S\u00e3o Paulo skyscraper with continuous grid of planters\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These works, among others, demonstrate how the artists engaged thoughtfully with both the physical and symbolic dimensions of Casa Bola, creating pieces that feel intrinsically connected to its identity,&#8221; said Assis.<\/p>\n<p>Except for last year&#8217;s show at Maison La Roche, the first three editions of Aberto were held at other Brazilian architectural landmarks, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Oscar-Niemeyer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar Niemeyer<\/a>&#8216;s Casa Oscar \u2013 the architect&#8217;s only residential project in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2303458 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/aberto-5-casa-bola-sao-paulo-brazil-exhibition_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Gallery-like level at Casa Bola\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>While most of the pieces are displayed in the gallery-like levels below the building&#8217;s spherical volume<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having explored several landmarks of modernist architecture, I felt it was the ideal moment to innovate once again and to present the singular, disruptive universe of Eduardo Longo,&#8221; reflected Assis. &#8220;He&#8217;s an architect I consider a true genius.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Aberto\/05 is the first of the Aberto shows where the curatorial team and the participating designers had the opportunity to work with a living architect, which Assis said proved &#8220;invaluable&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has allowed us to delve far deeper into the conceptual foundations of the building, to hear first-hand accounts of its creation, and to understand the intentions behind each decision,&#8221;
