But their moves this week mean they\u2019ve also got multiple second-round picks in the next two summers as well.<\/p>\n As I wrote Friday<\/a>, the overall was competent. That GM Patrik Allvin couldn\u2019t get a trade for Teddy Blueger done is a strike against him, as is not securing one more first-round pick.<\/p>\n They do have two first rounders this summer, but you know they would like to have had a third.<\/p>\n For that alone, we grade this deadline a B. But a B is a good grade. It\u2019s above average work. It\u2019s just not close to perfect.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s look at the five trades, plus the one waiver pickup, one by one.<\/p>\n The biggest trade of the week. The Canucks in the end did a veteran solid.<\/p>\n And they got a useful set of draft picks.<\/p>\n It was a move that we didn\u2019t really realize was possible till a few weeks ago but Myers is a solid NHL defenceman and he\u2019s a right shot to boot. He had control of the situation so finally connecting with the Stars, his preferred destination, and extracting a couple draft picks out of it is solid work.<\/p>\n Canucks Report<\/p>\n Thanks for signing up!<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n Advertisement 3<\/p>\n This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n Grade this one an A.<\/p>\n In the end, it\u2019s clear Garland looked at why he signed an extension last summer and where the team is now and he decided he was willing to head for other pastures.<\/p>\n This is the one poor grade for Allvin: there were about a half-dozen teams interested in him at one point or another. And then Columbus became a little desperate when Mason Marchment went down with what looked like a concerning injury on Thursday night. Turns out he\u2019s OK after tests came back negative.<\/p>\n It was scenario from the outside that screamed \u201cget a first!\u201d<\/p>\n And yet he didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n Grade this one C. It\u2019s a pass. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n Earlier in the week I had a source suggest that of all the Canucks\u2019 free agents, it was actually Kampf who was most likely to land somewhere.<\/p>\n He had a solid Olympics and there was really no case for the Canucks to keep him. Teddy Blueger should have been traded, but at least you know he\u2019s a leader on this team.<\/p>\n Advertisement 4<\/p>\n This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n Kampf on the other hand is a true mercenary; that\u2019s not a criticism. He started the year with Toronto, managed to land with the Canucks as a free agent and played well enough to become a trade-deadline trade chip. The Canucks had enough centres but knew other teams would pay a price for a centre with NHL experience.<\/p>\n Here we are. Something from nothing. It\u2019s a B-.<\/p>\n A surprising move, given how badly Reichel\u2019s time in Vancouver went. He was given a chance to be a centre, proved poor at it, couldn\u2019t finish despite a bevy of chances and landed in the AHL for his trouble.<\/p>\n Why the Bruins were interested isn\u2019t exactly clear, but getting any pick for him was impressive.<\/p>\n Sure it\u2019s a downgrade from the fourth-round pick they spent to get Reichel, but the odds that Reichel were going to be a player when they got him were low. The Canucks were in a real pinch when they made the trade and the Blackhawks knew that.<\/p>\n Here we are. This one\u2019s a B if only because Reichel\u2019s not even in the NHL.<\/p>\n Advertisement 5<\/p>\n This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n The smallest trade of the week, but one that might prove more useful than you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n Woo clearly was never going to play NHL games for the Canucks. He\u2019d proved to be a useful defender in the AHL and did get called up to the NHL a couple of times, but never suited up in a game. At 25, he is what he\u2019s going to be as a pro and the Canucks shipped him out for a defender who is two years younger but who has played NHL games.<\/p>\n Thompson is in his fourth season as a pro, so calling him a prospect is probably a stretch and he\u2019s also played 34 career NHL games, most of them with the San Jose Sharks last season.<\/p>\n He\u2019s got a bit of an offensive touch, so at the very least he\u2019ll help shore up Abbotsford\u2019s blue-line, but maybe he can play a smaller role as a depth blueliner in the NHL. When you\u2019re rebuilding, you need to cast your net far and wide for guys that might be part of the long-term solution but just as importantly, who could be stopgap solutions in the short term. If they can somehow also develop in tradeable players who can help you find more draft picks along the way, even better.<\/p>\n Advertisement 6<\/p>\n This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n This one is a C+. It\u2019s a fun bet.<\/p>\n Waiver claim: Curtis Douglas from Tampa Bay<\/p>\n Listen, I\u2019m not a fighting guy. It doesn\u2019t really do anything. (And I wrote a book about a guy who fought!) But when I said this team needs to show more fight than it did last Saturday versus Seattle or on Monday versus Dallas, I guess I was asking for the team to find some toughness.<\/p>\n Well, they did in the tallest player in the NHL. Douglas has eight fights to his name this season.
