If you’re eager to dive in and get technical with things, you can tweak some of your registry settings to ensure that you’ve got the fastest PC around. Or if you’re looking to put your fancy new graphics card to use, you can turn on hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.

While this won’t make your aging PC run significantly better, it helps with specific tasks and takes some additional strain off your CPU when the load becomes too high. PC parts working in harmony is a beautiful thing, so why not use that fancy graphics card to help other parts of your computer when they need it most, you know?

What is hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, exactly?

A lot of words for a simple premise

Credit: James Bruce / MakeUseOf

As the name suggests, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling helps out your CPU when things get a bit too resource-intensive for your CPU to handle on its own. By using the power of your GPU, you can help your struggling CPU render things faster, get more resources, and keep games, programs, and more running smoothly. It’s also a necessary feature if you’re running an Nvidia 40-series card and want to use DLSS or other frame generation technologies. If you turn this off, say goodbye to DLSS.

Using this setting lets your GPU manage anything from frame buffering to scheduling work on the CPU. It’s a great feature to have, but it can cause some issues with specific games and programs. While I suggest keeping hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling turned on, you may want to know where to find it in case of a game or application stuttering.

      OS

           Windows

      Minimum CPU Specs

           1Ghz/2 Cores

      Minimum RAM Specs

           4GB RAM

      Software Version

           24H2

How to adjust hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling

Just a couple of menus, and you’ll be up and running in no time

Credit: Shaun Cichacki/MUO

If you’re interested in testing this feature out for yourself, or you just want to verify that it’s actually on, getting to this setting is surprisingly simple. Unlike other Windows tweaks that are hiding in the middle of nowhere, like disabling write caching for speeding up your NVMe drives, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is right in your settings. To access this, open the Search Bar and type in Settings. From settings, find Display, followed by Graphics. Once here, under the Default settings prompt, you’ll find the option to change default graphics settings. Click this, and turn hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on or off, depending on your preference.

This setting should be available to anyone with an Nvidia 10-series card or newer, or an AMD 5000 series or newer card. If you’re not seeing this setting here, you may not have a capable graphics card that can help in this particular segment of your workload. Typically, this option is on by default in Windows 11, but verifying that it is turned on is a good idea.

What are the best use cases for this, though?

CPU-intensive programs, VR gaming, and low-end CPUs will see the most benefit

Curious users, myself included, like to know the ins, the outs, and the nitty-gritty before enabling or disabling specific features on their PCs. Seeing as hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is typically on by default, I normally paid it no mind. But, in researching more about this particular setting, I’ve seen a few particular use cases that may come of interest to specific users. This setting can help with stutter in VR games. It can work wonders for users with a lower-end CPU, and it can help with specific games via DLSS/FSR and frame generation.

While I’ve been experimenting with gaming on Linux over the past few months, I’ve also been making small tweaks to my Windows installation to try and make my favorite games run as smoothly on this side of the fence as well. One of the settings I’ve never had to mess with has been this one, as I’ve seen more gains than losses up to this point.

                    Related

I thought my CPU was maxed out until I tweaked these BIOS settings

A few BIOS tweaks made my PC feel brand new without a hardware upgrade.

There’s a chance it could cause issues for some users

I would recommend testing with it on and off to see if your experience differs

Yasir Mahmood / MakeUseOfCredit: Yasir Mahmood / MakeUseOf

While I’ve seen no issues with hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on my end, there are others who say it causes more issues than it’s worth. Laptop users notice that their devices run longer and are less power-intensive with the setting turned off, and some VR fans say it causes more stuttering. So, while this may be a great way to utilize your GPU unexpectedly for some users, others may discover that their experience is even better with this turned off.

Are you running into a ton of stuttering during your daily usage, or while you’re playing a game? Try turning this setting off. There’s a chance that your GPU may be working itself too hard with this setting turned on, causing the exact opposite effect of what I’m personally experiencing. Every system is built just a little bit differently, so trial and error may be required to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your build.

Test this setting out for yourself and see how it does

This could be just the thing you’ve been searching for all this time

Depending on the type of things you’re doing daily, there’s a chance that hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling could be a major game-changer for your game nights, or maybe even a bit of extra performance in your daily usage. You’re not going to see a massive difference, but a few frames here and there in your favorite games can make them better than ever, so it definitely doesn’t hurt toggling this switch a few times to see how it works.

Plus, unlike messing with the Windows Registry, there are no major issues that could cause your PC to start crashing or any threat of damaging your hardware. If it helps? Keep it on. Does it seem to hinder your performance? Turn it back off. Maybe you’ll discover that this is the key you’ve been waiting for all this time: to keep your PC running like a champion after all.

[6
49,48,61
post-521818","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-technology
["GET
