There\u2019s a \u2018hidden\u2019 Apple CarPlay feature<\/a> that most people accidentally overlook.<\/p>\n

Probably because it\u2019s turned off by default.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a simple feature, but it makes a huge difference when you\u2019re driving.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s also another explanation as to why this feature is not \u2018advertised\u2019 at all.<\/p>\n

This \u2018hidden\u2019 feature is sometimes confused with Siri<\/p>\n

Apple CarPlay is compatible with Siri, but it\u2019s also compatible with \u2018standard\u2019 voice control<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is crucial because the Voice Control accessibility feature is actually separate from standard Siri.<\/p>\n

While most drivers know how to ask Siri to \u2018Call Mom\u2019 or \u2018Play Music,\u2019 they don\u2019t realize they can control the entire interface hands-free using these voice commands.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, this feature is turned off by default, so you have to do something about it if you want to use it.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s a potential game-changer because Apple CarPlay<\/a> is designed, among other things, specifically to make driving a car safer and easier.<\/p>\n

And being able to control everything with your voice would obviously be a huge upgrade.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how you can turn on Voice Control in Apple CarPlay<\/p>\n

Turning Voice Control on is actually quite easy.<\/p>\n

All you have to do is connect your iPhone to your car\u2019s CarPlay, open Settings (on the car\u2019s display, not on iPhone), select Accessibility, scroll to Physical and Motor, and toggle Voice Control to On.<\/p>\n

This allows you to open various apps, move the map around in navigation apps without touching the screen, and so on.<\/p>\n

This could potentially be more useful than Siri for two reasons.<\/p>\n

First, Siri cannot perform certain tasks.<\/p>\n

For example, you can\u2019t move the map around Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze<\/a> using Siri.<\/p>\n

Second, it means you don\u2019t have to deal with Siri\u2019s famously (occasionally) erratic behavior and hallucinations.<\/p>\n

And that means maybe next time you won\u2019t have to say \u201cHey Siri, set navigation to home,\u201d only to hear back \u201cOkay! Calling\u2026 Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n
