The federal government is providing more than $4.3 million to community organizations across Canada aimed at strengthening supports for women and families experiencing violence.<\/p>\n
Women and Gender Equality Minister Rechie Valdez announced the funding Thursday ahead of International Women\u2019s Day on March 8.<\/p>\n
The funding will support eight organizations working on projects focused on improving services for survivors of gender-based violence and expanding access to justice and trauma-informed care.<\/p>\n
“International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate progress and recommit to action, but we cannot talk about opportunity, leadership, or economic growth without addressing safety,” Valdez said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“By scaling up proven, community-based initiatives, we are strengthening the supports that women and their families need to live free from violence and to fully participate in society.”<\/p>\n
Projects focus on survivor supports and prevention<\/p>\n
The funding will help expand programs in several provinces that provide services such as legal support, trauma-informed health care and culturally responsive services for survivors.<\/p>\n
Among the initiatives receiving funding is a project led by the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto aimed at expanding trauma-informed care and community response protocols for children affected by or at risk of sex trafficking.<\/p>\n
Other projects include programs supporting survivors experiencing brain injuries caused by intimate partner violence, expanding wraparound supports for Indigenous women and children, and improving access to legal information for survivors in remote communities.<\/p>\n
Some initiatives will focus on prevention, including youth education programs aimed at addressing toxic masculinity and reducing gender-based violence.<\/p>\n
Part of broader federal strategy<\/p>\n
The federal government said the investments build on earlier funding that has supported community-based programs across the country.<\/p>\n
Officials say the initiatives aim to reduce barriers to justice, strengthen collaboration between organizations and provide culturally appropriate supports for survivors.<\/p>\n
Gender-based violence remains one of the most significant barriers to equality for women and continues to affect families, communities and workplaces, according to the federal government.<\/p>\n
Ottawa also pointed to a commitment in the 2025 federal budget that allocated $223.4 million over five years, including ongoing funding, to advance efforts aimed at eliminating gender-based violence in Canada.<\/p>\n
