A man decided to investigate several common bits of advice about charging an iPhone<\/a> to get to the bottom of which ones are worth doing and which can be ignored.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve had your iPhone for a while, there\u2019s a good chance your battery health isn\u2019t what it once was.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And when it comes to extending your battery\u2019s life, there is so much advice out there \u2013 from never charging it to 100 percent<\/a> to making sure it\u2019s fully drained before charging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But which ones are actually worth following? YouTuber Proper Honest Tech<\/a> decided to find out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve heard of some of these iPhone charging ideas before \u2013 but they don\u2019t work <\/p>\n

In a bid to boost your battery life<\/a> and avoid upgrading or repairing your phone, there are all sorts of things that come \u2018recommended\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, like a lot of online viral hacks and hints, some of them simply don\u2019t work or aren\u2019t necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For starters, have you ever been told you shouldn\u2019t charge your iPhone overnight as you risk overheating the battery?<\/p>\n

Well, Proper Honest Tech was able to deftly shut down this piece of information by pointing out that modern phones stop charging once they hit 100 percent, and further to that, the iPhone uses Optimized Battery Charging, which pauses charging when it hits around 80 percent and then tops it up later.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, in short: you\u2019re fine to charge your iPhone overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Similarly, you may have been told to allow your iPhone battery<\/a> to completely drain before charging to prolong its life, but, again, this is no longer necessary on modern phones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You might have also heard that fast charging damages your battery and is best to be avoided.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, that\u2019s not the case with modern phones, as they charge in stages, which reduces the stress on your battery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The YouTuber went on to explain that, despite what you may have seen or read, our phones don\u2019t have a \u2018memory.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

But pointed out that they do degrade over time, and you can check your iPhone\u2019s battery health in the Settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And, he explained that when it comes to charging it isn\u2019t a case of \u2018any cable will do\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The content creator warned iPhone owners to never buy cheap or uncertified cables.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also dispelled the idea that you should keep your iPhone in Low Power Mode all the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As its name suggests, Low Power Mode will stretch out your battery, but it also disables a bunch of features and is only really necessary when your battery is low.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Oh, and there\u2019s no point in closing apps in an attempt to save your battery; in fact, closing and reopening apps will actually drain your iPhone faster. <\/p>\n

Not all of the tips turned out to be duds, though <\/p>\n

While many of the bits of advice he tested turned out to be outdated or just unnecessary, some of the hacks you\u2019ve heard will help improve your battery life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As mentioned above, it\u2019s perfectly safe to charge your iPhone overnight, but don\u2019t charge it under your pillow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When it\u2019s charging, your phone will get hotter, and by trapping it under a pillow, you could damage the battery and reduce its lifespan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another often-touted bit of advice warns against using your iPhone while it\u2019s on charge, and although it\u2019s safe to do so, it will impact how fast your iPhone will charge, so if you\u2019re in a rush, leave it alone.<\/p>\n

Along the same lines, you may have been told that popping your iPhone into Airplane mode will help it recharge faster, and it\u2019s true; it will charge it slightly faster, but turning it off entirely will charge it even faster.\u00a0<\/p>\n
