Speaking on the X&O’s Chat podcast<\/a>, the MVP explained how self-criticism and fear push him to perform at the highest level.<\/p>\n “Mike Tyson, when he was entering the ring, was afraid of his opponent. As he was walking in. Once he got in the ring, it was different,” Jokic said.<\/p>\n “Why should I think differently? If Mike Tyson was afraid of his opponent before the fight, and he’s a lot tougher than me… I know it’s a different sport. But like I said, I have that same fear or self-criticism when things start. When it’s over, sure, I analyze, but during the game, I feel very comfortable. It pushes me because you know you can do better. I expect more from myself. It’s a fear of failure,” Jokic explained.<\/p>\n Even after thousands of games in his career, Jokic still experiences pre-game nerves.<\/p>\n “I can’t say I have no fear. I do. I wouldn’t call it a fear of ‘failing’ exactly, because I’ve lost plenty of big games and I’ve won plenty of big games. But the feeling is always there. I’m not afraid of missing a shot, but you always have that tension.”<\/p>\n “I’ve played, I’m not ashamed to say, maybe 800 or 1,000 games in my life, and even today when I step on the court, I have butterflies,” the center added. “I think any player who doesn’t feel that should change sports.
