It started with long walks by the sea \u2013 easy enough for the Brighton-based 67-year-old \u2013 then Joe Wicks workouts for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strength training<\/a>. So far, so familiar.<\/p>\n<p>But when Kitty (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kittysstillliftingat67\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kittysstillliftingat67\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@stillliftingat67<\/a>) started to use small weights, something clicked. Soon, she had graduated to bigger barbells \u2013 and didn\u2019t stop there. &#8220;In lockdown I did a lot of eating and a lot of drinking,&#8221; laughs Kitty. &#8220;But I was also doing a lot of walking, and when I did Joe Wicks because my grandchildren were doing it, I realised that I really liked doing it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"39ea61f9-0090-4173-b948-36d5f9b5eda9-2\">For Kitty, it was the attraction of lifting weights that triggered the transition from living room workouts to powerlifting \u2013 a type of strength training consisting of three lifts: <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/how-to-do-a-squat-correctly\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/how-to-do-a-squat-correctly\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/how-to-do-a-squat-correctly\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">squat<\/a>, bench and deadlift. &#8220;It\u2019s the aesthetic of lifting heavy things,&#8221; she explains. &#8220;I started with a personal trainer, and I realised I was quite strong \u2013 not just strong for my age, but strong. And that gave me a boost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>With this burgeoning confidence, Kitty decided to change careers in her early sixties. &#8220;I was a Director of Children\u2019s Social Care, then it was suggested I retrain as a personal trainer,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I finished the personal training course when I was 62. I was the oldest on the course, and that was fine!&#8221; It was during this period that Kitty heard about a powerlifter called Betty Gray, who\u2019s &#8220;a little bit younger than me&#8221;. She was intrigued. &#8220;I&#8217;d never heard of powerlifting,&#8221; she says. &#8220;I found a coach. He has the wonderful name of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/delroymcqueen\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/delroymcqueen\/?hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Delroy McQueen,<\/a> and he\u2019s a superstar \u2013 and I got into powerlifting when I was 63.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SFk2fURehq29VNWF8qqwMR.jpg\" alt=\"Kitty in powerlifting competition with Kitty holding medal\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SFk2fURehq29VNWF8qqwMR.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/SFk2fURehq29VNWF8qqwMR.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Competitions won&#8217;t be for everyone &#8211; but Kitty says they are an inclusive and supportive environment for all. <\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: @sumoshots \/ Kitty Duffy)<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-33a2cc45-aa1d-443c-a98d-b0110fcd30de\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Pushing past boundaries<\/p>\n<p id=\"a2e3acc3-511e-40db-8f2c-6459b7fd0b7a\">What if your main hurdle is a lack of confidence in your body or ability? Astonishingly, Kitty felt the same. &#8220;I was intimidated at first! We all think people are judging us, or we&#8217;re not very good, or we&#8217;re doing it wrong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Kitty got past this (it\u2019s fair to say that \u2013 for a lot of us \u2013 one bonus of ageing is that experience teaches us to care less about what others think). And while gyms can look daunting, most establishments are friendly, including where Kitty trains and coaches. &#8220;I&#8217;m based at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/kingsgyms.com\/pages\/brighton\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/kingsgyms.com\/pages\/brighton\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kings Gym Brighton,<\/a> and there are some lovely people here \u2013 once people come in, they&#8217;re likely to stay,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>One of her clients is 70, while her powerlifting clients range from 15 to 63 \u2013 proving that you\u2019re never too old to start. &#8220;And I have one client who\u2019s been obese all her life \u2013 we work with what she brings, and we&#8217;ve reduced her insulin need very significantly,&#8221; says Kitty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up to our free daily email for the latest royal and entertainment news, interesting opinion, expert advice on styling and beauty trends, and no-nonsense guides to the health and wellness questions you want answered.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-281ac961-9632-409a-8301-ec52e8f84454\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Prepping your body<\/p>\n<p id=\"7c1c8ed0-d3bc-41c0-8c11-0839c9558dd9\">Diet is an important part of Kitty\u2019s life. The right food allows her to train harder and potentially suffer fewer injuries. But even without training, protein should be an essential part of every woman\u2019s diet. It&#8217;s needed to maintain muscle mass and bone density.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I make sure that with every meal there&#8217;s a protein source,&#8221; says Kitty. And I supplement, because \u2013 particularly as we get older \u2013 our need for protein increases. I put <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-protein-powders-for-women\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-protein-powders-for-women\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-protein-powders-for-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protein powder<\/a> in my porridge, and that gives me an extra 22 grams of protein to start the day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Certain supplements are also useful to support training. Kitty takes<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/creatine-for-women\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/creatine-for-women\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/creatine-for-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> creatine<\/a>, for example. &#8220;It\u2019s cheap, with virtually no side effects, and it allows you to train a bit harder,&#8221; she says. &#8220;There\u2019s also some <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/nutritionreviews\/article\/84\/2\/333\/8253584\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/nutritionreviews\/article\/84\/2\/333\/8253584\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interesting data<\/a> coming out about creatine and brain health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>When Kitty isn\u2019t training herself or others, or winning competitions, she takes some of her clients to events so they can get used to competing. \u2018I&#8217;m taking seven women to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wrpf.uk\/iron-maidens\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/wrpf.uk\/iron-maidens\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iron Maidens<\/a>,\u2019 she says. While the word \u2018competition\u2019 may conjure memories of school sports days and cause some of us to break out in a cold sweat, Kitty insists that these are inclusive and supportive environments. &#8220;One woman has two young children and disturbed sleep because of this, and a busy job, but she&#8217;s coming along, and she&#8217;ll be competing,\u2019 says Kitty. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter that she&#8217;ll probably lift less than everybody else there. Everybody is very encouraging of whatever you\u2019re doing for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5b67de0d-690b-4cb1-ae03-5a8d1f86d056\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>How to stay focused<\/p>\n<p id=\"50f5d2a9-e0a8-41a8-9b1f-580dcc59c59d\">So, what\u2019s the secret of Kitty\u2019s success in her autumn years? &#8220;You have to be disciplined, and it has to be habit-forming. You&#8217;re not going to get that in a couple of weeks,&#8221; she advises. &#8220;You have to say to yourself, this is what I do because it\u2019s setting me up for when I&#8217;m properly old, and I need to use the stairs, and I need to pick up my grandchildren. I want to be able to run around! I think, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/exercises-for-women-over-50\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/exercises-for-women-over-50\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/exercises-for-women-over-50\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">if we&#8217;re over 50<\/a>, we have to start planning and thinking about what we&#8217;re doing this for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been a significant increase in women who powerlift, including older women. Numerous <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.exeter.ac.uk\/faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences\/first-of-its-kind-study-shows-resistance-training-can-improve-physical-function-during-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.exeter.ac.uk\/faculty-of-health-and-life-sciences\/first-of-its-kind-study-shows-resistance-training-can-improve-physical-function-during-menopause\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies<\/a> have shown that both resistance and strength training are key to healthy ageing and longevity, and are particularly beneficial for menopausal women.<\/p>\n<p>Being disciplined is essential, but most of us will give up if something doesn\u2019t hold our attention, so finding an activity you love is crucial. &#8220;I do it because it makes me feel really good. I train <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/how-often-should-you-lift-weights\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/how-often-should-you-lift-weights\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/how-often-should-you-lift-weights\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four days a week<\/a> and if I had the time I\u2019d do it every day, but I think my family would divorce me!&#8221; says Kitty, who\u2019s not only a mum of three, but a grandmother of five.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s literally been life-changing. I feel grateful and lucky every day, and I\u2019ll carry on doing this until I can&#8217;t move.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-57136de3-90a8-4aaf-969f-479e1210421c\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>How to get into powerliftingPractice the compound lifts: &#8220;With powerlifting, you want to lift the most you can, possibly move for one repetition of squat, bench and deadlift. These are the three compound moves,&#8221; she says.Start light if you&#8217;re a beginner: &#8220;You can start training with just<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-resistance-bands\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-resistance-bands\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-resistance-bands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> resistance bands <\/a>or your own body weight to build muscle,&#8221; says Kitty.Consider a coach: &#8220;I think it&#8217;s important to have some training sessions, and it&#8217;s also important to have a programme, otherwise you start to feel stronger, and you continue at that level, when you need to increase the intensity or the volume or both, to push yourself a little bit harder,&#8221; she says.Explore your options: &#8220;If you can&#8217;t get a coach, most gyms give inductions, and they show you what to do,\u2019 says Kitty. &#8220;If you can&#8217;t get to a gym, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/dumbbell-workout-at-home\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/dumbbell-workout-at-home\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/dumbbell-workout-at-home\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weights at home<\/a> are fine as long as you progress.
