{"id":524572,"date":"2026-03-09T13:11:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/524572\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T13:11:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:11:09","slug":"ottawa-alberta-reach-agreement-in-principle-to-speed-up-major-project-approvals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/524572\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa, Alberta reach agreement in principle to speed up major project approvals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal and Alberta governments have reached an agreement in principle aimed at accelerating approvals for major infrastructure projects in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced a draft co-operation agreement Friday that would streamline environmental and impact assessments for large projects.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal would introduce a &#8220;one project, one review&#8221; approach designed to reduce regulatory overlap between federal and provincial governments while maintaining environmental protections and Indigenous consultation requirements.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This agreement is a meaningful next step toward faster, more efficient project reviews,&#8221; Smith said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Consultation period launched<\/p>\n<p>The draft agreement will be open for public consultation for 21 days, from March 6 to March 27.<\/p>\n<p>It will be posted on the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada\u2019s public engagement website, where feedback can be submitted online.<\/p>\n<p>Funding will also be available to support Indigenous groups participating in the consultation process.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed by Ottawa and Alberta in November 2025 aimed at strengthening collaboration in the energy sector and supporting Canada&#8217;s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Focus on energy and infrastructure projects<\/p>\n<p>Federal officials say the agreement could help speed up approvals for major projects such as pipelines, rail infrastructure, electricity generation and transmission networks.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said the partnership is intended to strengthen Canada\u2019s economy and diversify trade relationships amid shifting global markets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the face of global trade shifts, Canada and Alberta are launching the next phase of our partnership,&#8221; Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Together, we will build big and build fast to create a stronger, more sustainable, more independent economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Part of broader regulatory reforms<\/p>\n<p>The federal government has been negotiating similar co-operation agreements with other provinces, including British Columbia, Ontario and New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa says the agreements aim to reduce duplication in project reviews while maintaining environmental standards and respecting Indigenous rights.<\/p>\n<p>Through the federal Major Projects Office, the government says it is helping coordinate tens of billions of dollars in infrastructure investments.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say current major project initiatives across Canada represent more than $116 billion in potential economic investment and are expected to support thousands of jobs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The federal and Alberta governments have reached an agreement in principle aimed at accelerating approvals for major infrastructure&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":524573,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[194295],"tags":[49,48,20739],"class_list":["post-524572","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ottawa","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-ottawa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/524572","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=524572"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/524572\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/524573"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=524572"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=524572"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=524572"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
