Keep family and pets away from all watercourses.”

CVC added the snowpack throughout the Credit River Watershed area “is actively melting and still contains a significant snow water equivalent, ranging from approximately 100 mm in the upper watershed to 50 mm in the lower watershed.

“Combined with frozen ground conditions and the expected rainfall (this week), this may cause flooding along the Credit River and its major tributaries. Water levels in the rivers and creeks are actively increasing and may reach their banks. River ice continues to decay. The river ice in the upper reaches of the watershed continues to break apart, with forecasts indicating this trend will persist over the next few days.”

The conservation authority added the conditions, while enough to warrant caution, are not expected to result in ice jam flooding.

Additionally, “as snow and ice melt continue, the saturated ground and local streams and rivers may become icy and hazardous, particularly near culverts, bridges and dams. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses.”

A flood watch is issued when flooding is possible in specific watercourses or municipalities, CVC officials said, adding “municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should prepare.”

The conservation authority added it will closely monitor weather and water levels and will issue any additional statements as needed.

Those concerned about high water levels in their area can contact their municipality at 311.
