Gas prices in Calgary have taken a big climb<\/a> over the past week, and if you\u2019ve been wondering how high gas prices in the city have been in the past, we\u2019ve got you covered.<\/p>\n

Daily Hive spoke\u00a0with Suzanne Gray, sales and service consultant with Kalibrate, to learn about the highest gas prices recorded in Calgary over the past 10 years, and when they were reached.<\/p>\n

Before diving into historical highs for the price of fuel in Calgary, Gray stated that the reason behind the explosive rise in price we have seen recently is due to the Strait of Hormuz being blocked in the Middle East due to the U.S.-Iran war.<\/p>\n

\u201cReduced traffic through this Strait, which moves ~20 per cent of global crude supplies, is a problem, but the closure is also affecting crude oil production in the Middle East. Producers are running out of storage quickly and are therefore reducing production. This will continue until the Strait reopens,\u201d Gray stated.<\/p>\n

The highest gas prices recorded in Calgary each year over the past decade are as follows:<\/p>\n

Nov. 3, 2017, with a max retail gas price of $1.245 per litre
\nJuly 6, 2018, with a max retail gas price of $1.386 per litre
\nMay 2, 2019, with a max retail gas price of $1.266 per litre
\nAug. 28, 2020, with a max retail gas price of $1.059 per litre
\nOct. 7, 2021, with a max retail gas price of $1.439 per litre
\nJune 8, 2022, with a max retail gas price of $1.919 per litre
\nAug. 15, 2023, with a max retail gas price of $1.49 per litre
\nJuly 22, 2024, with a max retail gas price of $1.649 per litre
\nMarch 31, 2025, with a max retail gas price of $1.576 per litre
\nMarch 9, 2026, with a max retail gas price of $1.511 per litre<\/p>\n

2022 came out on top as the year with the highest gas price mark in Calgary over the past decade, with the steep prices observed due to supply disruptions caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war.<\/p>\n

The highest crude component of the pump price was also recorded on June 8, 2022, landing at 93.6 cents per litre. The most recent crude component of the pump price in Calgary was recorded on March 6, 2026, coming in at 74.3.<\/p>\n

Looking at the near-term, Gray stated that she didn\u2019t think the war would affect gasoline supplies in Alberta or anywhere in Canada in the near future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are ample supplies of crude oil in North America to feed our refineries and continue producing refined products. However, rising crude oil prices will be passed onto gasoline prices, as is already being seen at the pumps. Crude oil prices may rise further, leading to higher gasoline pump prices.\u201d<\/p>\n
