Calgary\u2019s Manchester Industrial<\/a> area is packed with good places to drink these days. In this stretch just off Macleod Trail, you can easily build an afternoon around brewery hopping. There are popular spots like Cabin<\/a> and Annex Ale Project<\/a> in the mix, along with plenty of other worthy stops scattered around the area. But if your goal is specifically to drink Czech-style beer in Calgary, there\u2019s one place I happily return to time and again, and that\u2019s Establishment Brewing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I spend a fair bit of time in Prague<\/a> every year, as plenty of people likely know by now, and I\u2019ve also written about the city\u2019s beer culture and the places worth seeking out<\/a>, for beer or otherwise. That\u2019s part of why Establishment resonates with me so strongly. Calgary has no shortage of great craft breweries, but ones making truly good Czech-style beer are still few and far between.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a brewery tossing some Saaz hops into a lager and calling it “Czech-inspired.” Tale as old as time. It\u2019s a brewery that clearly understands Czech beer culture is about more than just ingredients. It\u2019s about balance, drinkability, texture, foam, and the ritual of how the beer lands in the glass.<\/p>\n

Establishment is already widely regarded as one of the best breweries in Canada, full stop. Across the board, the beer here is thoughtful and impeccably made. Too often, breweries borrow a hop variety or nod vaguely to European tradition and leave it at that. Establishment goes much further, treating Czech-style beer with the kind of care and intention that makes the whole experience feel grounded in something real. It\u2019s an approach even my Czech friends in Calgary, whether first-generation, second-generation, or just visiting, respect.<\/p>\n

That extra effort is especially clear in the way the brewery serves and talks about its beer. Establishment doesn\u2019t just pour Czech-style lagers, it helps introduce drinkers to the three traditional Czech pours: hladinka, \u0161nyt, and ml\u00edko<\/a>. For anyone unfamiliar, foam is not an accident or something to be avoided here; it\u2019s an essential part of the drinking experience. That kind of on-site education makes a big difference, because it gives people a better understanding of why Czech beer can feel so distinct from a standard pint.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also real Czech beer style range on display here. Establishment\u2019s Czech-inspired offerings<\/a> move from Well Acquainted, a bright and crisp Czech pilsner, to Middle Child, an amber lager, and More Than Rain, a smooth dark lager. That range matters, because Czech beer is too often flattened into one simple pilsner-shaped idea. (Don’t get me wrong, as that’s my preferred sip, but we love a range moment once in awhile too!)<\/p>\n

Calgary drinkers can easily find Czech classics like Pilsner Urquell<\/a> and Kozel<\/a> around town, whether on tap or in cans, and that makes for a fun point of comparison. I love Pilsner Urquell and often say it\u2019s the best mass-produced beer in the world. Czechia takes its iconic beers very seriously, and tasting those benchmarks alongside what Establishment is doing only makes the brewery\u2019s attention to detail stand out more.<\/p>\n

In a city with no shortage of breweries, Establishment stands apart by offering what I\u2019d argue is some of the best Czech-style beer you\u2019ll find outside of Europe. If you\u2019ve spent time in Prague and have been chasing even a hint of that magic back home, or if you\u2019re simply curious about what makes Czech lager culture so beloved, this is where I\u2019d tell you to start in Calgary.<\/p>\n
