{"id":525466,"date":"2026-03-09T22:36:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/525466\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T22:36:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:36:09","slug":"australian-border-force-intercepts-150000-units-of-melatonin-amid-crackdown-on-unregulated-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/525466\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Border Force intercepts 150,000 units of melatonin amid crackdown on unregulated products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Australian Border Force (ABF) has intercepted the equivalent of thousands of bottles of melatonin in four months, as health authorities crack down on unregulated imports of the sleep hormone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Figures obtained by the ABC show the ABF referred 150,000 units \u2014 defined as an individual tablet, capsule or gummy \u2014 to the medicines watchdog for assessment between September 1 and December 31 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Once it receives a referral from the ABF, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) assesses the product to determine whether it was lawfully imported before notifying border force officials to either seize or release the goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The TGA has been warning patients to stop using unregistered imported melatonin products,<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-29\/tga-safety-concerns-over-melatonin-products\/105829782\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105829782\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> after testing in its laboratories indicated &#8220;significant discrepancies&#8221;<\/a> between the actual melatonin amount and what was on the label.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-24\/melatonin-poisons-hotline-kidshealth\/105802406\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Parents turn to melatonin amid spike in poisons calls<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ABC has analysed data from poisons hotlines across the country, revealing almost 1,500 calls were made about children taking melatonin last year, a dramatic rise on previous figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some online products, which are popular with parents as a sleep aid for children, had as much as four times the amount of melatonin advertised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are continuing to monitor signals relating to harmful unregistered products and will notify the ABF to seize and destroy any counterfeit products intercepted at the border,&#8221; Dr Jones said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The symptoms of melatonin overdoses range from headaches and drowsiness to less common cases of nausea and vomiting, and Dr Jones said increased quantities of melatonin \u2014 whether taken intentionally or by accident \u2014 could heighten the risk of those side effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;As a doctor who sees a lot of children, I&#8217;m very much supportive of this idea that careful action is being taken to ensure that safety of things that we give to our children is paramount,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Taking the piss&#8217;: Prescriptions cost 10 times more than online products<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Perth public health professional Naomi Campbell-Smith has taken melatonin for about five years after her doctor prescribed it to help counteract the effects of ADHD medication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It just helps me go to sleep \u2014 it helps me fall asleep and stay asleep \u2014 which is kind of very important to functioning and existing as an adult in the workplace and in the world the day after,&#8221; (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Generally, most Australians need a prescription to use melatonin, but many people circumvent the process by buying melatonin online from overseas retailers, because it is often significantly cheaper and can be bought without a script.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Campbell-Smith has previously used prescriptions to get melatonin from the pharmacy and at one point was getting melatonin compounded by the chemist, but that is now only an option for medications that are not commercially available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As a result, she said the pharmacy products now cost her anywhere from $300 to $480 for 90 tablets of 5mg melatonin, compared to $32 for 90 gummies online with the same amount of melatonin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve always used it with a script. I&#8217;m very much a goody two shoes when it comes to this sort of thing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t opt to go online.
