The United States invasion of Iran has caused gas prices to spike across North America, and here in Winnipeg, many fueling up say the pinch at the pumps is hitting hard as prices peak.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sucks,\u201d said Darcy Knight, who was purchasing gas in Winnipeg.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s not nice. Especially when you\u2019ve got a kid at home and another one on the way. It\u2019s starting to crunch.\u201d<\/p>\n
Knight was one of many who were filling up on Monday as fuel prices jumped to $1.49 in Winnipeg, an increase of more than $0.20 when compared to a month ago, according to price-tracking website GasBuddy.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t know when it\u2019s going to stop. We don\u2019t know if it\u2019s going to hit two bucks or not. Right? It\u2019s hard to say,\u201d said Knight.<\/p>\n
The increase is rooted in the ongoing conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran, as the war is snaring critical, global trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz, where tanker traffic has screeched to a halt off the Iranian coast, and strikes are also taking place on oil-producing facilities in the country\u2019s capital of Tehran.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn hour ago, we saw the price was just $1.39 \u2026 And then we came back, it\u2019s already $1.49,\u201d explained May Zhen, who was getting gas in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n
Zhen says she\u2019s seen prices change quickly, but all people can do is try to deal with the increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou still have to work. You have to drive the kids to school. I guess there\u2019s nothing really much we can do about it,\u201d said Zhen.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Malcom Preslaw, another motorist getting gas, said, \u201cI drive a lot. I have to drive to work, I have to drive to school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Preslaw says the higher costs will come with higher levels of stress, saying the increase is \u201ca lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing in high school and also doing MITT as well, it\u2019s pretty expensive trying to commute around and stuff. Especially when just getting my licence. So it\u2019s kind of a pain,\u201d Preslaw explained.<\/p>\n
Brian Klump says a $20 fill isn\u2019t going the distance it used to.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re planning your trip a little bit better. Instead of wasting gas, you\u2019re turning the car off when you\u2019re stopped somewhere for a while, instead of letting it run,\u201d said Klump.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He says more cash at the pumps means less for other necessities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not acceptable to me anyway. It\u2019s just another bill; instead of for groceries, now you\u2019re paying another $40 to $50 bucks at the pump.
