The days of high adventure might finally be back. One of Arnold Schwarzenegger\u2019s signature franchises,<\/a> Conan, has long been on the actor\u2019s wish list<\/a> of films he could revisit. And now, that idea has taken its biggest step in years. Christopher McQuarrie<\/a>, the Oscar-winning writer of The Usual Suspects and director of the last four Mission: Impossible movies, is attached to write and direct a third film in the franchise, King Conan.<\/p>\n

Schwarzenegger himself first broke the news at an event called the Arnold Sports Festival<\/a> in Ohio, which was then confirmed by the Hollywood Reporter.<\/a> The project is set up at 20th Century Studios, which is owned by Disney.<\/p>\n

Conan the Barbarian<\/a> was one of Schwarzenegger\u2019s earliest breakout roles way back in 1982, and it subsequently got a sequel, Conan the Destroyer, in 1984. The first film, however, ended with an image of an older, grizzled Conan as a king and teased many more adventures to come. It\u2019s an idea the actor, and plenty of others, have tried to bring to life for decades. But now, somehow, it\u2019s moving forward again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith King Conan, it\u2019s a great old story that Conan was 40 years as king, and now he gets forced out of the kingdom, and there\u2019s conflict, of course, but somehow he comes back, and there\u2019s all kinds of madness, violence, magic, and creatures, and stuff like that,\u201d Schwarzenegger said at the event. \u201cAnd now, of course, there\u2019s all kinds of special effects. The studio has plenty of money to make those movies really big so I\u2019m looking forward to all of those projects.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since it\u2019s been almost 50 years since Schwarzenegger swung Conan\u2019s sword, though, he was sure to clarify that the film will take that into consideration. \u201cNow, what they do is that they write the part,\u201d he said. \u201cThey don\u2019t write them like I\u2019m 40 years old; you write it to be age-appropriate. I\u2019ll still go in there and kick some ass, but it will be different.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the addition of McQuarrie certainly makes King Conan, or The Legend of Conan, as it\u2019s sometimes been referred to, more real than ever, we aren\u2019t holding our breath. Just because an Oscar-winning director takes a crack at something doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s going to happen.<\/p>\n

Plus, as much as Arnold Schwarzenegger and fantasy fans love Conan, it\u2019s not exactly the marquee name it once was. Jason Momoa even tried to bring it back a few years ago, something you probably don\u2019t even remember happening. But there\u2019s a lot of potential here, so we hope it happens. It\u2019s time for the days of high adventure to reign once again.<\/p>\n
