<\/p>\nThe Alberta government\u2019s 2026 budget contains $44-million in funds for 10 new school projects in Edmonton and the locations of where the schools will eventually be built were released on Monday.<\/p>\n

The province says the funds will support planning for eight new schools and two replacement schools \u2014 a move aimed at easing pressure on classrooms that have already been operating over capacity.<\/p>\n

Sixteen new schools are expected to be completed this year.<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the new projects are part of a broader effort to keep pace with demand.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m confident these new spaces will help address the pressure,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s still more that needs to be done. That\u2019s why we have 161 projects underway across the province.\u201d<\/p>\n Edmonton Catholic Schools says many of its buildings are already stretched beyond their limits.<\/p>\n \u201cNearly half of our schools are operating beyond their intended capacity, even after adding 39 modulars,\u201d said Edmonton Catholic Schools board chair Sandra Palazzo.<\/p>\n \u201cMany of our schools are overcrowded.
