{"id":526286,"date":"2026-03-10T07:20:35","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T07:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/526286\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T07:20:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T07:20:35","slug":"top-5-illnesses-to-impact-people-in-eastern-ontario-by-2040","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/526286\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 illnesses to impact people in eastern Ontario by 2040"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Ottawa\u2019s population ages, so too does the health issues mounting in the city and across eastern Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>A new report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oha.com\/communications\/projected-patterns-of-illness-in-ontario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ontario Hospital Association details what types of chronic illnesses will become more prevalent across the province <\/a>and for what age groups. The statistics were prepared by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, and it showcases how the diseases will impact each area of Ontario. <\/p>\n<p>By 2040, there will be about 3.1 million people living with \u201cmajor illness.\u201d Not all are the oldest people in the province; the report notes that one in four adults over the age of 30 will have a major illness in 2040. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis represents the most significant increase among any age group and highlights the scale of challenges the province\u2019s healthcare system is facing,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n<p>The complexity and earlier onset of chronic illnesses are of particular concern, OHA writes.<\/p>\n<p>5 fastest growing illnesses in eastern Ontario<\/p>\n<p>In this report, eastern Ontario stretches from just outside of Toronto to the Quebec border, and it encompasses the major municipalities of Peterborough, Belleville, Kingston, Ottawa, and everything in between.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2020 and 2040, patterns are showing that kidney disease and failure, hearing loss, Crohn\u2019s and colitis, substance use disorders and dementia are the major illnesses impacting eastern Ontario and are likely to increase.<\/p>\n<p>This is based on a percentage change over the decades.<\/p>\n<p>By 2040, the report details that the most common chronic conditions are likely to be osteoarthritis, hypertension, asthma, diabetes and hearing loss.<\/p>\n<p>It expects that rates of no illness should remain stable in 2040 when compared to historical rates in 2002. But, a \u201csharp rise\u201d can be seen for major illnesses for people aged 70 to 89.<\/p>\n<p>Population shifting in Ottawa<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.citynews.ca\/2026\/02\/14\/ottawa-population-expected-to-hit-1-68-million-by-2051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">According to population projections, the nation\u2019s capital is expected to hit 1.68 million people<\/a> by 2051, a report from Hemson Consulting reads. While it\u2019ll be mostly driven by migration, the city\u2019s age structure will be changing.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest growth is expected among working-age adults and seniors.
