Things could get very wet \u2014 and very slippery \u2014 in the Ottawa area this week.<\/p>\n
There is the potential for prolonged periods of freezing rain in the nation\u2019s capital and elsewhere in Eastern Ontario, Environment Canada stated in a special weather statement on Monday, March 9.<\/p>\n
The freezing rain could last up to a full 24 hours in some areas, the weather agency said, with ice buildup of 10 to 20 mm.<\/p>\n
The rain is expected to begin Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and last through Wednesday or Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
In addition to the freezing rain, Environment Canada cautioned that there could also be localized flooding in low-lying areas because, in the event of heavy freezing rain, the precipitation might not freeze immediately.<\/p>\n
Anyone with a backup power source should make sure that everything is ready to be used.<\/p>\n
\u201cIce build up is likely to cause tree branches to break,\u201d the weather statement read. \u201cWidespread utility outages are possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
The temperature is supposed to get up to 6 C on Tuesday, but is to dip down to -2 C that night. It should hover right around the freezing mark all day Wednesday, when Environment Canada is calling for a high of 1 C and a low of -1 C.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the expected high is -1 C, with a low of -9 C.<\/p>\n
