That\u2019s the group overseeing the project, which is slated to include a hotel, conference and meeting space, restaurants, retail stores and residential dwelling units. The plan is to begin construction in early 2027 and open in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurrey is a growing city. It\u2019s going to overtake Vancouver in terms of being the most populous and it\u2019s becoming more and more the centre of Metro Vancouver,\u201d Aujla said. \u201cI see this area between the King George hub station and Gateway Station being the next downtown for the Metro Vancouver region. And people are referring to the arena, but I see it more as a cultural event space. It\u2019s going to host many, many events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surrey opened up the bidding process for developers, operators and team tenants for the new complex in January and contracts are slated to be awarded in August.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The team question is an intriguing one. That will be central in all of this. Photo by City of Surrey<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">We\u2019ve heard much in this market about how big a bonus <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" your=\"\" venue=\"\" is=\"\" from=\"\" the=\"\" vancouver=\"\" whitecaps=\"\" situation=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/sports\/soccer\/mls\/vancouver-whitecaps\/what-whitecaps-want-bc-place\" target=\"_blank\">running your venue is from the Vancouver Whitecaps\u2019 situation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">That circles us back to the <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" canucks=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/category\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/vancouver-canucks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> and possible interest in the new rink. They\u2019ve shown a willingness to oversee venues. They took over management of the Abbotsford Centre (now the Rogers Forum), which is home to their <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" canucks=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/tag\/abbotsford-canucks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abbotsford Canucks<\/a> AHL farm team, <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" january=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/vancouver-canucks\/canucks-aquilini-investment-group-set-to-take-over-management-of-abbotsford-centre\" target=\"_blank\">in January 2022.<\/a> That puts them in charge of things like concert bookings.<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">The Canucks signed a <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" extension=\"\" in=\"\" february=\"\" for=\"\" abbotsford=\"\" which=\"\" runs=\"\" through=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/abbotsford.canucks.com\/news\/canucks-sports-and-entertainment-and-the-city-of-abbotsford-agree-to-five-year-facility-extension-at-rogers-forum\" target=\"_blank\">five-year extension in February for Abbotsford, which runs through 2031.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">The Canucks also have the National Lacrosse League\u2019s Vancouver Warriors, who play their home games out of <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" arena=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/entertainment\/rogers-arena-what-to-know-about-this-vancouver-sports-and-entertainment-venue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rogers Arena<\/a>. That\u2019s a nine-date schedule over the winter.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement 4<\/p>\n<p>This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>Much has been made the past few years about the Canucks\u2019 lack of a practice facility, but Surrey would be a lengthy commute for players, considering most live in Vancouver or on the North Shore.<\/p>\n<p>The Vancouver Giants could also be in play regarding a new rink. They have been tied to moving to Surrey in the past, with reports a decade ago of the team flirting with the idea of partnering with the City of Surrey to build a new arena near the Scott Road SkyTrain Station.<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\"><a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" the=\"\" giants=\"\" moved=\"\" from=\"\" pacific=\"\" coliseum=\"\" to=\"\" langley=\"\" events=\"\" centre=\"\" in=\"\" may=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/sports\/hockey\/ewen-giants-owner-talking-new-home-renovation-with-seats-being-added-to-lec\" target=\"_blank\">When the Giants moved from the Pacific Coliseum to Langley Events Centre in May 2016<\/a> Giants owner Ron Toigo said of the Surrey situation: \u201cRight now, we\u2019re really focused on this. We\u2019ve put that on the back burner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aujla, as it happens, has a Canuck tie, since he spent seven years as the vice-president of real estate for the Aquilini Investment Group prior to signing on with SCDC in November. Keep in mind, though, that he was general manager of real estate and facilities management for a six-and-a-half-year run for the City of Vancouver, so he\u2019d had various connections in that real estate and development space. This would be a complex structure,\u201d Aujla said.<\/p>\n<p>The district has earmarked an area just west of King George Highway for the complex. It currently features the B.C. Lions practice facility and is steps away from SkyTrain. Aujla added that \u201cwe continue to be open to discussions if the proponents have other sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city does own other lands here, too,\u201d he continued. \u201cYou want the optimal site. And this certainly is a very good site. It\u2019s between two SkyTrain stations. It\u2019s a question of whether there\u2019s a site that\u2019s better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really looking to proponents to provide the best proposal possible that gives us a venue and entertainment district that achieves what we want to see for the city centre. The Giants, for instance, didn\u2019t have it at the Coliseum and don\u2019t have it now at the LEC. The WHL average is 4,040. The team\u2019s announced attendance last season was 3,738.<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">The <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" canucks=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/theprovince.com\/tag\/abbotsford-canucks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abbotsford Canucks<\/a>\u2019 announced attendance average is 3,839. They were at 4,152 last season.<\/p>\n<p>Planning for a 10,000-seat venue is tied to also attracting concerts and cultural events, explained both Aujla and Jeff Arason, who\u2019s Surrey\u2019s chief capital programs officer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s in the middle of what\u2019s available,\u201d Arason said. \u201cWe have some venues in the region that are smaller, at 5,000 (Langley Events) to 7,000 (Rogers Forum) and we have ones that are larger, at 18,000 (<a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" arena=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" data-link-type=\"backlink\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/entertainment\/rogers-arena-what-to-know-about-this-vancouver-sports-and-entertainment-venue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rogers Arena<\/a>), and the 10,000-fixed seat addresses that gap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about building vibrancy within our city centre. It\u2019s about total nights of activity. How that splits out between sports and entertainment is to be evaluated. The total number of nights is what\u2019s attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arason admits there was \u201csome evaluation early on,\u201d regarding an outdoor stadium for Surrey, but \u201ca goal from this project is the vibrancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are limitations on what it can provide during the winter months, due to the open air aspect,\u201d he said of a stadium. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to have the entertainment in the winter months and a reduced sports schedule.
