Comedian Conan O\u2019Brien realized that\u00a0late-night shows\u00a0were in deep trouble after his viral appearance on the popular online show \u201cHot Ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporter,\u00a0the former late-night host weighed in on the cancellation of \u201cThe Late Show With\u00a0Stephen Colbert\u201d\u00a0as well as the brief pulling of \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d following comments made after the assassination of Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n
O\u2019Brien appeared in 2024 on \u201cHot Ones,\u201d a show on YouTube where celebrities answer questions while eating chicken wings that increasingly get spicier. <\/p>\n
His appearance on the show has received more than 15 million views.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was the moment the scales fell from my eyes,\u201d O\u2019Brien told The Hollywood Reporter. \u201cIf a guy can do World Series numbers with overhead that looked, to me, to be about $600, and you have every big star lining up to do his show or Chicken Shop Date \u2026 that\u2019s when I profoundly understood that late night shows are in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert, whose\u00a0program is ending in May,\u00a0called O\u2019Brien the \u201cpatron saint of ex-talk show hosts\u201d and revealed he\u2019d been urging Colbert to quit for years. O\u2019Brien had a near three-decade stint across multiple late-night programs, hosting \u201cLate Night\u201d (1993-2009) and then briefly \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d (2009-2010) on NBC, before moving over to TBS and hosting \u201cConan\u201d until 2021.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were out, a few Emmys ago, and he kept saying, \u2018I want you to know there\u2019s a lot of fun to be had when this is over, so don\u2019t feel like you need to stay.\u2019 It almost hurt my feelings, but he was just being kind. He Dutch uncle\u2019d me,\u201d Colbert told The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n
Some believe Colbert\u2019s criticism of President Donald Trump played a role in his show ending. Trump\u2019s FCC (Federal Communications Commission), headed by\u00a0Brendan Carr,\u00a0had to approve David Ellison\u2019s Skydance Media purchasing CBS parent company Paramount.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien said, \u201cI\u2019m of the mind that yes, these shows are going away and will become something else.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, O\u2019Brien added, \u201cBut I don\u2019t like when other malign forces intervene, because they\u2019re trying to curry favor. That pisses me off.\u201d<\/p>\n
In September, Kimmel\u2019s late-night show was\u00a0pulled off the air\u00a0after his remarks about Kirk\u2019s alleged assassin sparked outrage and a veiled threat from the FCC. <\/p>\n

Disney decided to\u00a0suspend the show\u00a0after two major affiliate owners pulled airings of Kimmel from their stations, and Kimmel reportedly had told executives he would not apologize for his comments. His show returned following the brief hiatus.<\/p>\n
CBS announced last year that Colbert\u2019s show would go off the air this May, citing it as a purely financial decision and denying it had anything to do with the then-looming merger between Paramount and Skydance.<\/p>\n
