During peacetime when someone fires a gun at or toward the American consulate in Toronto, they are shooting at the United States.<\/p>\n

When it\u2019s done while the United States is at war, it could become a major diplomatic incident.<\/p>\n

Throw in that some members of the Iranian-Canadian community who support the fundamentalist Islamic regime were out there protesting on the weekend \u2014 as counter-protesters from the community who support the U.S. and Israeli actions also gathered, and this could end up being a turning point as well as a concern if Americans are safe in Canada.<\/p>\n

Like the shootings at Jewish synagogues, a message is being sent. But this is horrifying.<\/p>\n

Certainly, this is more than a routine gun call. It\u2019s a potential game changer.<\/p>\n

Police are all over this. Forensics are on the scene.<\/p>\n

The building has security and is said to have a 24-hour staffing presence.<\/p>\n

Police said a white Honda CR-V was westbound on Dundas St. W. when it turned south onto University Ave. and stopped in front of the consulate.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo males exited the vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the building. The suspects then re-entered the vehicle and drove southbound on University Ave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police said officers \u201clocated evidence consistent with a firearm discharge, including damage to the glass and door of the building, as well as shell casings at the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

People were inside the building at the time, but no injuries have been reported,\u201d police added.<\/p>\n

Shooting related to war in Iran?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is completely outrageous,\u201d said Councillor Brad Bradford, adding, \u201cBullets flying in an indiscriminate way has to stop. The time for condemnation and empty words is over.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a crisis. It will be investigated as a terror event on its own. It will also be probed as something potentially connected to the war in Iran.<\/p>\n

It also will open up conversations about how protests continue at that location. This is not\u00a0just concerning the strained relationship between Canada and President Donald J. Trump\u2019s America, but how protesters have easy access to University Avenue going forward.<\/p>\n

The shooting that took place at the U.S. consulate early this morning is an absolutely unacceptable act of violence and intimidation aimed at our American friends and neighbours.<\/p>\n

Premier Doug Ford on X called the shooting \u201can absolutely unacceptable act of violence and intimidation aimed at our American friends and neighbours\u201d and said he expects \u201cthat police at all levels will bring every resource to bear to find the people who did this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ford also said: \u201cEveryone at all levels of government and across Canada needs to make clear that there is zero tolerance for this sort of intimidating and dangerous behaviour, and that we will do whatever it takes to prosecute and punish the people responsible to the fullest extent of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

The investigation is in its early stages.\u00a0But this was no ordinary shooting and no ordinary target.<\/p>\n

Shootings not so shocking anymore<\/p>\n

The good news is there are no injuries. The bad news is how this will be taken by Canada\u2019s neighbour.<\/p>\n

This shocking shooting comes on the heels of three synagogues being shot up in similar fashion this past week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like this city has become so divided and some have lost the sense of who we are as Torontonians,\u201d said Bradford, who is running for mayor in October. \u201cThis isn\u2019t us.\u201d<\/p>\n

He knows, however, things have changed here when you see synagogues fired upon and now America\u2019s main footprint in Toronto.<\/p>\n
