{"id":527428,"date":"2026-03-10T19:19:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/527428\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T19:19:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:19:28","slug":"surreys-polar-plunge-raises-9605-for-special-olympics-bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/527428\/","title":{"rendered":"Surrey\u2019s Polar Plunge raises $9,605 for Special Olympics BC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>              Surrey\u2019s Polar Plunge raises $9,605 for Special Olympics BC<\/p>\n<p class=\"pubStamp\">Published 11:00 am Tuesday, March 10, 2026<\/p>\n<p>A brave group of about three dozen Special Olympians and first responders plunged into the waters of the Pacific Ocean off Blackie Spit Park at Crescent Beach on Saturday (March 7) for Special Olympics BC.<\/p>\n<p>The Surrey Polar Plunge raised over $9,600 for Special Olympics BC.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Andrews, an athlete from South Surrey, raised $1,500 for the event. \u201cMy dad and I had a competition of who could raise the most, and I raised the most by $10,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>These fundraisers are vital for Special Olympics BC, Andrews said. \u201cAll the money that we raise is for us to go to provincials or tournaments,\u201d she said. \u201cIf we didn\u2019t do fundraisers like this, we wouldn\u2019t have any money to do any of our programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrews competes in basketball, bowling, and bocce, and in August, she is going to nationals in Medicine Hat, Alta., for bocce.<\/p>\n<p>Surrey Police has hosted the community event for the past several years, said Deputy Chief Const. Mike LeSage.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that, the Surrey RCMP organized the event.<\/p>\n<p>LeSage said the event \u201cbrings us together with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a community policing organization, and being in the community is number one to us.
