{"id":527727,"date":"2026-03-10T22:21:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T22:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/527727\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T22:21:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T22:21:14","slug":"738-visits-to-hospital-ers-made-by-e-scooter-riders-in-mississauga-since-2023-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/527727\/","title":{"rendered":"738 visits to hospital ERs made by e-scooter riders in Mississauga since 2023: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electric scooter riders are visiting emergency departments in Mississauga in growing numbers with an assortment of injuries, hospital officials say.<\/p>\n<p>The data, which shows a steady rise in e-scooter-related injuries \u2014 some of them severe \u2014 between early 2023 and late 2025, is expected to be a topic of discussion among councillors on Wednesday at Mississauga city council.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to the mayor and council, Dr. Sarah McClennan, Trillium Health Partners\u2019 chief and medical director, emergency and urgent care, pointed to a significant increase in visits to the ERs at both Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs e-scooter use increases across Mississauga, we are seeing a corresponding rise in related injuries,\u201d the letter reads, noting Mississauga\u2019s two hospitals recorded 738 e-scooter-related visits to their ERs between April 2023 and this past November.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers also show a year-over-year increase during that period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most common injuries include fractures, sprains, lacerations and head injuries. These injuries often result from falls, collisions, multiple riders on a single scooter, failure to follow traffic signals or riding on sidewalks where interactions with pedestrians increase risk,\u201d the letter from Dr. McClennan continued. \u201cWe are also seeing upper extremity trauma and head injuries, some of which are severe.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidyard-player-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773170532_961_awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu.jpg\" data-videoid=\"790139\" data-uuid=\"awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu\" data-v=\"4\" data-type=\"inline\" data-muted=\"1\" style=\"width:100%\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>        <img width=\"1024\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-1.55.02-PM-1024x513.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>      <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these injuries are preventable. Helmet use remains one of the most important protective measures to reduce the risk of serious head injury. Riding at safe speeds, avoiding distracted or impaired riding, ensuring one rider per scooter and following traffic rules and pedestrian spaces are important safety practices to support injury prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the two-and-a-half-year span, the top individual months for number of emergency department visits were:<\/p>\n<p>June 2025 (69 visits)<br \/>\nJuly 2024 (62 visits)<br \/>\nJuly 2025 (58 visits)<br \/>\nSeptember 2024 (48 visits)<br \/>\nAugust 2025 (45 visits)<\/p>\n<p>Hospital officials said their letter is in response to city council\u2019s recent discussion and interest in e-scooter safety in Mississauga.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-799582\" class=\"wp-image-799582 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Escooter-injuries-chart-from-THP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1283\" height=\"281\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-799582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Source: Trillium Health Partners \u2014 numbers for Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals)<\/p>\n<p>Numbers from the ERs at the city\u2019s two hospitals come as City of Mississauga officials consider their next move concerning the use of electric scooters, particularly the renting out of the personal mobility devices through the city\u2019s relatively new e-scooter and e-bike rental program.<\/p>\n<p>Ward 8 Coun. and Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney said at city council on Feb. 25 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/pause-e-scooter-rentals-until-safety-concerns-dealt-with-in-mississauga-deputy-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mississauga should \u201cpause\u201d its program<\/a> \u2014 as it relates to the e-scooters only \u2014 until various safety issues surrounding use of the micromobility devices are addressed.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested a \u201cregulatory framework\u201d is needed to better manage the use of e-scooters, but first the city must temporarily halt its program and then do some homework before taking next big steps on that front.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-795999\" class=\"wp-image-795999 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Deputy-mayor-missy-Matt-Mahoney-city-council-feb-25-2026.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1008\" height=\"794\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-795999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ward 8 Coun. and Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney wants to \u201cpause\u201d e-scooter rentals in Mississauga until safety concerns can be properly addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Mississauga\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/336313-km-were-covered-by-e-scooter-riders-in-mississauga\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">e-scooter\/e-bike rental program<\/a>,\u00a0which since summer 2024 has made some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/more-than-1000-e-bikes-and-e-scooters-now-for-rent-on-mississauga-streets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">900 electric scooters and 300 electric bikes available for people to rent<\/a> and use at various places including parks, the downtown core and other neighbourhoods throughout the city, was reviewed by senior city staff this past fall with an eye toward identifying areas for improvement in spring\/summer 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Privately owned e-scooters also a concern, says Mahoney<\/p>\n<p>The latest report concluded the program \u201chas demonstrated performance improvements in 2025 with increased ridership, improved parking compliance and reduced complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, concerns over the safe use of e-scooters remain.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the city\u2019s rental program, Mahoney has also expressed worries about the dangerous use of privately owned electric scooters on roads, sidewalks and elsewhere across the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the Wild West (out there),\u201d he said last fall, not mincing words in describing what he views as a chaotic environment in which people of all ages seem to be riding the micromobility devices with reckless abandon \u2014 endangering themselves and others.<\/p>\n<p>Last September, Mahoney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/e-scooters-should-be-banned-in-mississauga-says-deputy-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called for a ban on e-scooters<\/a>, saying at the time \u201cthese things scare the hell out of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/editorial-guidelines\" class=\"editorial-guidelines-link d-block mb-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n            INsauga&#8217;s Editorial Standards and Policies        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last 30 Days: 31,923 Votes<\/p>\n<p>All Time: 1,254,388 Votes<\/p>\n<p>    222 VOTES<br \/>\n    Are high gas prices changing your travel routines?
