{"id":528204,"date":"2026-03-11T03:21:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T03:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/528204\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T03:21:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T03:21:13","slug":"mississauga-receives-28-million-in-federal-funding-to-help-ongoing-efforts-to-boost-housing-supply-city-of-mississauga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/528204\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississauga receives $28 million in federal funding to help ongoing efforts to boost housing supply \u2013 City of Mississauga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The third installment of the Housing Accelerator Fund will help the City continue to get more homes built and make them more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The City has received $28.2 million from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) to help get more homes built faster in Mississauga. This is the third installment the City has received under the HAF, totalling more than $84 million in federal housing funding to date.<\/p>\n<p>The HAF is designed to support the delivery of new homes, including important housing enabling-infrastructure. The City will use the third installment of the HAF to:<\/p>\n<p>Support the funding available for grants under the City\u2019s multi-residential stream of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/services-and-programs\/building-and-renovating\/incentives-for-building-affordable-rental-housing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Affordable Rental Housing Community Improvement Plan<\/a>. This program offers incentives to private and non-profit developers. It\u2019s designed to get shovel-ready rental housing projects with affordable units under construction as soon as possible.<br \/>\nOffsetting shortfalls resulting from reductions to development charges and fees. The City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/services-and-programs\/planning-and-development\/growth-charges\/development-charges\/development-charges-by-laws-and-rates\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">development charges incentives<\/a> program \u2013 which was recently expanded to provide deeper incentives for purpose-built rental apartments \u2013 is helping kick-start construction to make housing more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Stimulating housing construction<\/p>\n<p>The City has made significant strides in changing the housing landscape since receiving its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/city-of-mississauga-news\/news\/mississauga-to-receive-112-9-million-in-federal-funding-to-help-build-more-homes-faster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first HAF installment<\/a>. In January 2025, following the release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/housing-taskforce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor\u2019s Housing Task Force<\/a> report, Mississauga became one of the first municipalities in Ontario to reduce and\/or eliminate development charges for residential housing. Other important actions include:<\/p>\n<p>Tax relief for new multi-residential development: In response to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pub-peelregion.escribemeetings.com\/FileStream.ashx?DocumentId=37181#page=14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">motion by Mayor Parrish<\/a>, Peel Region approved a resolution adopting a new municipal Multi-Residential Property Tax subclass to help encourage the development of much-needed rental housing. The new subclass provides a 35 per cent property tax reduction for eligible properties.<br \/>\nIncentives for additional residential units and fourplexes: The City\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/publication\/the-gentle-density-incentive-program\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gentle density incentive program<\/a> provides grants to cover city fees and development charges (if applicable). The City also offers pre-approved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/garden-suites\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">garden suite design plans<\/a> that residents can use free of charge and has partnered with the federal government on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/city-of-mississauga-news\/news\/mississauga-partners-with-federal-government-on-housing-design-catalogue\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Housing Design Catalogue<\/a>.<br \/>\nMaking it easier to build housing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/projects-and-strategies\/city-projects\/increasing-housing-choices-in-neighbourhoods\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neighbourhoods<\/a>: Council approved updates to the City\u2019s\u00a0Official Plan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/services-and-programs\/building-and-renovating\/zoning-information\/zoning-by-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zoning By-law<\/a> to allow fourplexes as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/projects-and-strategies\/city-projects\/increasing-housing-choices-in-neighbourhoods\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">semi-detached homes and homes on smaller lots<\/a> in residential neighbourhoods.<br \/>\nSimplifying planning approvals for housing near transit: Mississauga is moving forward with pre-zoning lands in the City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mississauga.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/4580dedfa04f4c92af73faa492326d6f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Protected Major Transit Station Areas<\/a>. Mississauga is one of the first municipalities in Ontario to pre-zone lands of this scale.
