{"id":528672,"date":"2026-03-11T08:19:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T08:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/528672\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T08:19:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T08:19:14","slug":"medical-wait-times-costing-canadians-billions-in-lost-wages-productivity-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/528672\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical wait times costing Canadians billions in lost wages, productivity &#8211; Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/fraser-institute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fraser Institute<\/a> study released on Tuesday showed the financial impact of long wait times for surgery and treatment in Canada\u2019s health-care system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The study showed that an estimated 1.4 million people were waiting for necessary treatment, costing $4.2 billion in lost wages and productivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians waiting for health care aren\u2019t just waiting for care or deteriorating medically or risking a poor outcome from treatment when they finally get the treatment they need,\u201d Nadeem Esmail, director of health policy studies at the Fraser Institute, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re losing productivity at work, time with friends and family, with their children, with their grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study used data from the\u00a0Fraser\u00a0Institute\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraserinstitute.org\/studies\/waiting-your-turn-wait-times-for-health-care-in-canada-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Waiting Your Turn<\/a> survey of Canadian physicians who, in 2025, reported the national median waiting time from specialist appointment to treatment was 13.3 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians are paying twice for health care. They\u2019re paying through their tax dollars for the health care system that fails to deliver the timely health care, and then they\u2019re paying with their own time, with their productivity, with their lost work while they\u2019re waiting for that health care that is being delayed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The $4.2 billion in lost wages is considered \u201cconservative\u201d as it doesn\u2019t take into account the 15.3-week wait to see a specialist, or the wait for diagnostic testing. The total median wait time in Canada for medical treatment was 28.6 weeks in 2025 which is the second-longest in the survey\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe certainly know and understand that when individuals are waiting for health care, they are risking adverse medical events, consequences from the deteriorating condition, \u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly health news<\/p>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are facing the prospect of more complex treatments and poor outcomes at the end, and that will have a cost to the health-care system as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRayanne Boychuk said she\u2019s running out of options as she waits to see a specialist in Alberta.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSupplied: Rayanne Boychuk\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Rayanne Boychuk is one of those 1.4 million people waiting to see a specialist. The Edmonton-area woman was diagnosed with Graves\u2019 disease 15 years ago. She\u2019s undergone a number of procedures since then and recently started feeling ill again after an allergic reaction.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started getting a really bad stomach-ache and I just couldn\u2019t get out of bed,\u201d Boychuck said. \u201cI was so tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was diagnosed with eosinophilic gastritis, a rare gastrointestinal disorder that causes elevated white blood cell counts. She said her treatment is complicated by also having Graves\u2019 disease, an autoimmune condition.<\/p>\n<p>She would receive steroids to help, but that\u2019s no longer an option.\u00a0She finished her last dose of the medication, before it causes more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI\u2019m running out of options, so that\u2019s where it gets scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors told the mother she needs to see a specialist but wait times are longer than a year to get in to see someone who understands her condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look up the condition it has scary things like organ failure and heart problems and I\u2019m just kind of left in limbo until somebody can see me,\u201d she said. \u201cIt makes you feel helpless, knowing that you need help and you just cannot access it in a normal amount of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI don\u2019t know the answer is, but I know it\u2019s not working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family is considering going out of province to try to get help sooner.<\/p>\n<p>The Fraser Institute said a combination of higher-than-average incomes and longer-than-average wait times has put Alberta third highest in terms of the individual cost of waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Global News spoke with Alberta Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Sciences Matt Jones, who said the data from the Fraser Institute is different than the data they have internally which from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cihi.ca\/en\/access-data-and-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI)<\/a>, but adds the province is investing in ways to shorten the wait times to see specialists and get the treatment that\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need people and we need facilities,\u201d Jones said. \u201cWe\u2019ve added 2.200 doctors over the last five years and we\u2019ve added 12,000 nurses over the same period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones adds that the province is also trying to leverage anesthesia care teams and implement a program to fast-track access to specialist treatment, streamlining the process to refer patients from general practitioners to specialists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the surgical side we are putting $300 million into enhancing, upgrading and building surgical facilities over the next three years,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>While politicians debate the fix to health-care system wait times, Boychuck hopes they understand that there\u2019s a human cost to the wait as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt honestly feels like we\u2019re cattle sometimes,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re all just shoved through the system, band-aid fixes, and you just hope for the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t&amp;copy 2026 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc.\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Fraser Institute study released on Tuesday showed the financial impact of long wait times for surgery and&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":528673,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[118258,17225,45,49,48,24365,84,72417,44],"class_list":{"0":"post-528672","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-business","8":"tag-alberta-health-care","9":"tag-alberta-health-services","10":"tag-business","11":"tag-ca","12":"tag-canada","13":"tag-fraser-institute","14":"tag-health","15":"tag-health-matters-edmonton","16":"tag-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/528672","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=528672"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/528672\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/528673"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=528672"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=528672"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=528672"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
