CLEARWATER, Fla. \u2013 Spencer Jones homered again Tuesday, a day after the Yankees officially optioned him back to Triple-A.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the biggest thing I\u2019ve gotten out of this (camp) is the feeling of I belong, and I can compete and do whatever to help the team win,\u2019\u2019 Jones said before the Yanks\u2019 4-2 exhibition victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.<\/p>\n

Jones leads the Yankees with four Grapefruit League home runs, but he could\u2019ve doubled that total and still started the season at Scranton\/Wilkes-Barre.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s just no current opening for regular play in the Yankees\u2019 crowded veteran outfield, and that same math probably applies to Jasson Dominguez, who also homered Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Dominguez\u2019s homer was right-handed, the side the switch-hitter must hone (along with his left field defense) to fulfill his promise or at least resurrect his trade value.<\/p>\n

So, the RailRiders might have the minors\u2019 best outfield until a need arises or the right deal comes along before the Aug. 3 deadline.<\/p>\n

Spencer Jones ‘knocking on the door’ to Yankees\"Mar<\/p>\n

One option, particularly for Jones, is that he just bashes his way to the Bronx.<\/p>\n

Watching the 6-foot-7 Jones uncoil that updated, Shohei Ohtani-modeled swing \u2013 with a homer to left-center, where the wind was carrying \u2013 was one more tantalizing glimpse at his signature strength.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all been positive and there\u2019s still more to come with it,\u2019\u2019 Jones said of his stance, arms extended across the plate, with a toe-tap (no leg kick) trigger.<\/p>\n

In that setup, Jones feels \u201cvery still, very stable. It\u2019s just about being on time and swinging at the right pitches.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

And speaking of timing\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as you can, don\u2019t focus on things that might be out of your control,\u2019\u2019 was manager Aaron Boone\u2019s advice to Jones, after the team optioned him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s still improvements he needs to make in his game,\u2019\u2019 Boone said, referencing a need to cut down the strikeout totals \u2013 not any easy task given Jones\u2019 prodigious power swing.<\/p>\n

But the \u201creality is, he\u2019s pushing through right now. He\u2019s knocking on that door,\u2019\u2019 said Boone.<\/p>\n

Jones could break that door down, or someone could wind up on the injured list, or maybe someone\u2019s lackluster start provides an opening.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never want to hear it, but it is what it is,\u2019\u2019 Jones said of being optioned. \u201cI\u2019ve got a lot of good work to do, and obviously a long season ahead of us.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpportunities are available and it\u2019s about taking advantage of it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Jasson Dominguez’s subtle swing change\"Mar<\/p>\n

In the spirit of just wanting \u201cto try something new\u2019\u2019 from his far less productive right side, Dominguez made a slight swing alteration this winter.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, I had a big leg kick. This year, not so much,\u2019\u2019 Dominguez said of getting his left foot down quicker. \u201cOverall, I feel pretty good\u2019\u2019 about it.<\/p>\n

As Boone has said, \u201cit\u2019s his natural side, that\u2019s why I see the potential there\u2019\u2019 as a righty hitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, I think it\u2019s an experience thing. I think he still controls the zone from that side,\u2019\u2019 said Boone. \u201cIt\u2019s just continuing to get reps from that side.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

In the short term, those at-bats might be coming at Scranton.<\/p>\n

Dominguez, who just turned 23, has just 118 at-bats in parts of three MLB seasons as a righty hitter, with a .530 OPS (in 350 at-bats as a lefty hitter, it\u2019s a .790 OPS).<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s still a better left-handed hitter, but there\u2019s no reason to think that over time, the right side can\u2019t (improve),\u2019\u2019 said Boone. \u201cBecause he\u2019s got power, he\u2019s got plate discipline.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a matter of continuing to gain experience.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
