Saskatchewan\u2019s government is fighting back against Ottawa\u2019s gun buyback program<\/a> through measures it says aim to protect firearm owners.<\/p>\n

The province says it\u2019s proposing legislative changes that would allow owners to apply for exemption certificates on guns prohibited by the federal government.<\/p>\n

It says the certificates would allow owners to continue to possess and store their guns until Ottawa provides fair compensation for them.<\/p>\n

Saskatchewan says the certificates would also exempt owners from some charges.<\/p>\n

A section of the Criminal Code gives firearms exemptions for police, military and people who are under the authority of federal or provincial governments.<\/p>\n

Applications for certificates would be only available to those with valid licences and they must be in good standing.<\/p>\n

Premier Scott\u00a0Moe\u00a0told delegates Wednesday at the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities that his government is taking a \u201cfirm stand\u201d against Ottawa\u2019s \u201cgun grab.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one is going to show up on your doorstep and say, \u2018We need to gather up your firearms,\u201d\u00a0Moe\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
