{"id":530158,"date":"2026-03-11T23:33:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T23:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/530158\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T23:33:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T23:33:08","slug":"brampton-council-considering-led-crosswalks-as-part-of-new-traffic-calming-measures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/530158\/","title":{"rendered":"Brampton council considering LED crosswalks as part of new traffic calming measures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been nearly four months since the <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2025\/10\/30\/ontario-speed-cameras-to-soon-be-removed-after-bill-passes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ford government banned speed enforcement cameras<\/a>, leaving cities searching for other ways to slow\u00a0drivers down.<\/p>\n<p>In Brampton, city officials say they received around $7 million from the province to help with the installation of new traffic calming measures \u2013 a far cry from the estimated $30 million a year in revenues it expected from speed cameras.<\/p>\n<p>While a staff report is expected to support the installation of more speed bumps, roundabouts and increased signage, some councillors are looking at making some higher-tech moves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose existing traffic calming measures, whether they be speed bumps or bigger signage or extra signage, they haven\u2019t been proven to be as effective as they\u2019ve been in the past,\u201d said Coun. Rowena Santos.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the city agreed to launch a pilot project for what they hope is the future of slowing things down \u2013 smart LED crosswalks, from a made-in-Canada company.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/led-smart-crosswalk-2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4785881\"  \/>Artist rendering of smart LED crosswalk to be used as part of a pilot project in Brampton. CITY OF BRAMPTON\/HO<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like an integrated system approach to dealing with notifying cars that they are entering a community safety zone or school zone, measuring their speed before they enter the safety zone, using LED lighting on the ground,\u201d explained Santos. \u201cSo you could see it when there\u2019s snow, when it\u2019s cloudy, when it\u2019s dark or even during the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where speed cameras were previously placed, they actually worked as a deterrent, reducing speeds by an average of 9 km\/h.
