Soaring prices at the pump are taking a toll on Calgary charities that provide transportation and delivery services to those in need.<\/p>\n

Volunteering slowdown<\/p>\n

When Annastasia Stevens sees prices at the pump rising, the co-executive director of Calgary Seniors thinks about her volunteers.<\/p>\n

The organization has two main programs affected by gas prices: its essential transportation program and its shopping companion program.<\/p>\n

Stevens said volunteers in the latter program aren\u2019t reimbursed for gas, and that means they\u2019re absorbing bigger hits to their wallets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat might lead to either stop volunteering or reduce the amount they\u2019re volunteering,\u201d said Stevens.<\/p>\n

Calgary Seniors is worried high gas prices will deter people from signing up to volunteer for its escorted transportation programs. (Emma Mattos)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a difficult problem to navigate when the waitlists for both programs combined are growing to 800 seniors, she said.<\/p>\n

Calgary Meals on Wheels is bracing for the same problem. It has around 450 volunteers who deliver meals using their own vehicles.<\/p>\n

Christine Hentschel, manager of strategic initiatives and partnerships, said the organization has historically seen gas prices impact its volunteer programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a hit a couple years back where we did see some volunteers who reduced their number of trips that they made for us. \u2026 Hopefully we don\u2019t get to that point,\u201d said Hentschel.<\/p>\n

Prices expected to go higher<\/p>\n

McClain predicts the worst of gas prices is yet to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the end of this week or early this weekend, we\u2019re probably going to see as much as 10 to 15 more cents per litre added onto the national average,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Past that, McClain said, it\u2019s tough to predict how long these elevated gas prices will last.<\/p>\n
