{"id":530262,"date":"2026-03-12T00:37:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T00:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/530262\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T00:37:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T00:37:21","slug":"calgary-transit-proposing-first-bus-route-link-up-with-tsuutina-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/530262\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary Transit proposing first bus route link-up with Tsuut&#8217;ina Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Public transit users in Calgary may soon be able to travel to and from a neighbouring First Nation for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A proposed Calgary Transit bus route would travel between some southwest communities and The Shops at Buffalo Run, a shopping complex just outside of Calgary\u2019s southwest limits on Tsuut\u2019ina Nation territory that includes a Costco and other amenities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The proposed Route 103 would provide two-way service to communities to the west of the Southland and Anderson LRT stations, and would complement existing neighbourhood bus routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A map of the proposed line shows the bus passing through Braeside, Canyon Meadows, Woodlands and Woodbine, travelling along arterial roads such as Anderson Road, Southland Drive and 24th Street S.W.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bus would cross Tsuut\u2019ina Trail (the portion of the southwest Calgary ring road that cuts through the Nation\u2019s territory) at an existing overpass on 130th Avenue S.W.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\" The busy parking lot of the Costco Wholesale located at the Taza development on Tsuut\u2019ina Nation at the west edge of Calgary on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/7af66fcb757f55945c2bceb9573fb25d.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p> The busy parking lot of the Costco Wholesale located at the Taza development on Tsuut\u2019ina Nation at the west edge of Calgary on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, a Calgary Transit official said the bus line is still just a proposal, as representatives from the city and Tsuut\u2019ina Nation continue discussions over the route alignment, timelines and other details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThat\u2019s all been a great discussion and we\u2019re in the middle of it right now,\u201d said John Lea, Calgary Transit\u2019s senior leader in transit design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But he said there is sufficient ridership demand for a bus route linking the two communities, noting many southwest Calgarians do their shopping in Buffalo Run.<\/p>\n<p>Not the first time Calgary Transit could leave city\u2019s boundaries<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If it does come to fruition, Route 103 would mark just the second time Calgary Transit has extended service outside of city boundaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Calgary Transit\u2019s mandate is to provide public transportation within city limits, except in cases where the agency has received council direction to extend service outside of municipal boundaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 2021, the city entered a partnership with the City of Chestermere to <a href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/news\/local-news\/calgarys-max-purple-bus-line-extending-to-chestermere-connecting-the-two-cities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:extend the Max Purple bus rapid transit line;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;extend the Max Purple bus rapid transit line&quot;}\" class=\"link \">extend the Max Purple bus rapid transit line<\/a> to the lake community just east of Calgary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Route 103 would require a similar transit service agreement with Tsuut\u2019ina Nation, said Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean, whose ward includes Woodbine, Woodlands and Canyon Meadows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019ve had lots of good conversations with the new chief and council,\u201d said McLean, who is also the chair of council\u2019s intergovernmental affairs committee. \u201cThere\u2019s some details to be worked out on cost-sharing, but I\u2019m glad to get the route out there, and get it started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got Costco and lots of good things that residents need to go back and forth to, so I will champion it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor \u2018very bullish on forging closer ties with Tsuut\u2019ina Nation\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mayor Jeromy Farkas also voiced support for the new route on Wednesday, saying it reflects the city\u2019s growing relationship with Indigenous and intermunicipal partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Connecting Calgary\u2019s public transit with Tsuut\u2019ina Nation also builds on some of the collaboration set in place by a new regional table involving Calgary and five of its neighbour municipalities, Farkas added. That new planning group formed in December, replacing the previous Calgary Metropolitan Region Board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI had the opportunity recently with (Chief Ellery Starlight), the new incoming chief of Tsuut\u2019ina Nation, to talk about ways we can better collaborate from the nation-to-municipal perspective,\u201d Farkas said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m very bullish on forging those closer ties with Tsuut\u2019ina Nation.
