Meanwhile, WTI, the US benchmark, also soared 8.7% to $94.8.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmw3bvk000h3b6ugnsul9gf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the conflict in the Middle East drags on, the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 a critical oil shipping route carrying roughly one-fifth of global daily oil production \u2013 remains effectively shut with Iran attacking ships trying to transit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmwkbsi000n3b6uctaaon6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response, Saudi Arabia \u2013 the world\u2019s largest oil exporter \u2013 has to redirect its maritime trade to its western Red Sea ports to avoid the Strait. Many other Gulf nations have also seen their energy infrastructure attacked and have reduced their output.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmwkokr000p3b6u28xdiv6d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oil prices have witnessed huge volatility since the US and Israel struck Iran more than a week ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/08\/business\/oil-prices-war-iran-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spiking to nearly $120 per barrel<\/a> for Brent crude on Sunday before cooling down in subsequent days.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmwqt19000u3b6uut4p2w1s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, member countries of the International Energy Agency unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil \u2013 the largest release of emergency oil stocks in history.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmz5avc00033b6pn94m710c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The record amount far surpasses the 182 million barrels of oil that countries put onto the market in two tranches in 2022 when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmx6tky000z3b6uj1jh3axb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the return of oil prices above $100 suggests that the release does not appear to be sufficient in calming investors\u2019 jitters over a continued energy disruption caused by the near-shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmz5xjs00053b6pcv7kj066@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whether the price will remain above the $100 mark in the hours to come remains to be seen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmwb8j2000l3b6ugfmi5nw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oil majors typically hedge in the futures market during the day.
