{"id":533143,"date":"2026-03-13T06:42:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T06:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/533143\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T06:42:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T06:42:11","slug":"hurricane-strength-winds-knocked-over-semi-trucks-on-the-coquihalla-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/533143\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane-strength winds knocked over semi trucks on the Coquihalla Highway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tDescrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>The wind that swept through the Fraser Valley and Hope, B.C., on Wednesday night was so strong that it tipped semi trucks on their sides.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The trucks were travelling on the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/coquihalla-highway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coquihalla Highway<\/a>, before the Othello Road exit, when it is believed the first few trucks were blown on their sides.<\/p>\n<p>Trucks waiting in the traffic, as the vehicles backed up, were also blown over.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Truscott with Mario\u2019s Towing told Global News that they had already righted nine semi truck trailers by Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the worst I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Truscott said some of the semis were fully loaded, while others were empty and they had to unload any items in the trailer before standing them back up.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen anything like it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>In total, about 14 semis were believed to have tipped over.<\/p>\n<p>The Coquihalla Highway was closed for many hours overnight while crews cleared the vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Windstorm wreaks havoc across South Coast'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WEB_MVW_PIC.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:32<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWindstorm wreaks havoc across South Coast\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Weather<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Global BC meteorologist Kristi Gordon says peak wind gusts overnight reached 139 km\/h in Hope.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon said that it is the same as category 1 hurricane-strength winds.<\/p>\n<p>Abbotsford recorded 85 km\/h winds, Agassiz recorded 74 km\/h winds, Victoria Gonzales recorded 106 km\/h winds and the Coquihalla Summit recorded 87 km\/h winds.<\/p>\n<p>The Chilliwack Fire Department said crews responded to 18 calls for service overnight when multiple trees came crashing down onto homes, roads and power lines.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>One person suffered minor injuries when a tree struck a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was chaos out there,\u201d Cultus Lake resident Drew Mctaggart said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBranches were flying.
