{"id":533156,"date":"2026-03-13T06:50:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T06:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/533156\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T06:50:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T06:50:13","slug":"new-event-hopes-to-bring-more-people-to-edmonton-downtown-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/533156\/","title":{"rendered":"new event hopes to bring more people to Edmonton downtown Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new event with three arts and music organizations looks to bring more people back to the downtown core and reach the pre-pandemic level of foot traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The event is set to take place Saturday in the Arts District, a section of downtown Edmonton, from the art gallery to the Winspear Theatre, next to Churchill Square.<\/p>\n<p>The first-ever Arts District Day is\u00a0a collaboration between the Citadel Theater, Winspear Theatre and the Art Gallery of Alberta and is funded by the Edmonton Arts Council. (Leo Cruzat, CityNews)<\/p>\n<p>Jessie Van Rijn, executive director of the Citadel Theatre said, events like these help bring people downtown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt drives folks downtown,\u201d Van Rijn said. \u201cWe know that these free activities help build trust with families and audiences to come downtown, and that\u2019s such a major part of downtown revitalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Businesses in the area say they are still not seeing a return to pre-pandemic foot traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly Zaidan has been operating in L\u2019Espresso Cafe on 99 Street for 20 years. He says while business was booming until the pandemic, the caf\u00e9 was just surviving.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/CITADEL-THEATRE-BUILDING-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-733586\" style=\"width:925px;height:auto\"  \/>Citadel Theatre in the Arts District, downtown Edmonton, on March 12, 2026 (Leo Cruzat, CityNews)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to lay off some of our staff, and we have to reduce our business hours,\u201d Zaidan said. \u201cI don\u2019t see it as 100 per cent recovered yet, especially because a lot of the City staff are still working from home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Art organizations in the area also say their memberships and subscriptions have still not bounced back fully to pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople\u2019s behaviour and their experience of cultural activities and organizations have changed,\u201d said Catherine Crowston, executive director and chief curator at Art Gallery of Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also not fully back downtown in terms of the kind of return to work.
