It was deemed a violation of the Charter and public schools ended this practice. Section 76 of the B.C School Act states: “All schools and provincial schools must be conducted on strictly secular and non-sectarian principles.”

This principle seems to be lost in many Surrey public schools as religious holidays and accommodations take place across the district for select religious holidays.

Surrey is a diverse community with numerous faiths, religions and beliefs – if a public school chooses to accommodate and celebrate one faith, then they must do all – and if that’s the case then students would never learn as it would be an endless holiday.

There should be no religion of any kind in Surrey and B.C. public schools. Those who do want this can choose from the numerous faith-based schools that exist for this reason.

Steven Feldman, Surrey

LETTER: Surrey schools shouldn’t recognize any religion Published 7:00 am Friday, March 13, 2026 Editor: Re: ‘Surrey secondary…

[194299
49,48,87674
0":"post-533968","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-surrey","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-surrey
["GET
