“We’re not looking for sneaky ways to surveil Canadians. We respect their privacy,” Anandasangaree said. <\/p>\n
Asked whether the legislation is a modernization of wire-tap laws, he said it is not.<\/p>\n
Anandasangaree said the bill doesn’t enable additional powers to law enforcement, but shortens the initial process of identifying which telecommunications company a piece of information \u2014 such as a phone number, email address or account \u2014 is attached to.<\/p>\n
Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Chief Const. Steve Rai said the bill will help streamline investigations and solve crimes more quickly.<\/p>\n
He said the VPD’s internet and child exploitation unit receives more than 600 files per year to investigate, and the files begin with limited information.<\/p>\n
“This means officers must obtain judicial authorizations and serve production orders on telecommunications companies before the investigation can even move forward.”<\/p>\n
He said the bill would make it easier for police to identify which telecommunications service provider an offender may be using.<\/p>\n
“This allows investigators to move forward more quickly to serve production orders and secure critical evidence,” he said, adding the legislation would require companies to respond in a shorter timeframe once the production order is served.<\/p>\n
