\n Health<\/a>, News<\/a>\t<\/p>\n \t\t\tMarch 13th, 2026 The\u00a0Mushuau\u00a0Innu First Nation and\u00a0Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Health Services\u00a0are\u00a0advising\u00a0the public of an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB)\u00a0within\u00a0the community of\u00a0Natuashish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n To reduce the risk from TB,\u00a0the\u00a0Mushuau\u00a0Innu First Nation and\u00a0NL Health Services\u00a0have been actively\u00a0identifying\u00a0contacts and potential new cases through\u00a0contact\u00a0tracing\u00a0and\u00a0supporting access to testing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Facts About TB\u00a0<\/p>\n Individuals who are experiencing symptoms of TB should contact the local community clinic for an appointment.\u00a0<\/p>\n Symptoms associated with TB include:\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0persistent cough\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fever\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0night sweats\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0weight loss\u00a0<\/p>\n It is also possible to be infected with TB and not have any symptoms.\u00a0TB is a disease caused by bacteria that usually affects the lungs. It is spread through the air when a person with active TB coughs, talks, laughs, or sings.\u00a0In most cases TB is transmitted after close and prolonged exposure to someone with\u00a0the\u00a0active disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Prevention and Treatment\u00a0<\/p>\n While TB can cause significant illness, treatment is available within the community. Treating\u00a0TB is important both for the health of the person who is ill and to prevent\u00a0spreading\u00a0illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n Those with\u00a0symptoms of TB\u00a0are\u00a0encouraged\u00a0to seek medical assessment quickly.
