Whether it\u2019s in the infield or in the outfield, Arizona Diamondbacks former first-round pick Jordan Lawlar came into spring training with one goal: Make the Diamondbacks\u2019 Opening Day roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the only goal, honestly,\u201d Lawlar told Arizona Sports\u2019 Bickley & Marotta Friday.<\/p>\n

Lawlar<\/a> hit .294 with an .897 OPS and five extra-base hits last spring and has hit .323 with a 1.174 OPS and four home runs through 10 games this spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had the hard work gene in me, and kind of trusting that and trusting my work I put in every day,\u201d Lawlar said. \u201cThat just turns back into controlling the controllables and going out there, trust your preparation, trust your approaches and at the end of the day, go dominate.\u201d<\/p>\n

A big part of dominating this spring has been Lawlar\u2019s more \u201cwell-rounded\u201d approach offensively. He\u2019s focused on shifting his approach so he can hit more types of pitches.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hit the bad ones and take the good ones, ideally,\u201d Lawlar said. \u201cSo it kind of boils back down to approach and what you\u2019re looking for. How that plays into your strengths and what kind of pitcher you have on the mound, and committing to your one thing that you\u2019re focused on.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Lawlar has found success in spring training this year and likely has himself in position to make the Diamondbacks\u2019 Opening Day roster<\/a>, it\u2019s been a journey for the 23-year-old.<\/p>\n

After playing his first full season in the minors in 2022, Lawlar got called up during the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

While it was a limited sample size (34 at-bats), the then-20-year-old<\/a> struggled, hitting .129 with a .335 OPS.<\/p>\n

Lawlar returned to the minors for 2024 and raked. He hit .318 with a .900 OPS.<\/p>\n

After getting experience in the Dominican Winter League in the offseason, the Diamondbacks youngster started the 2025 season at Triple-A Reno before getting two separate call-ups.<\/p>\n

Between his eight-game May stint and 20-game stint late in the season, Lawlar compiled 74 plate appearances in the majors last year. While his numbers improved from his 2023 stint, they still weren\u2019t good.<\/p>\n

Lawlar hit .182 with a .545 OPS. He had seven doubles, drew six walks and struck out 26 times.<\/p>\n

He had another chance to play in the Dominican Winter League this offseason, and now he\u2019s using everything he\u2019s learned over the last four-plus years to make a push for Arizona\u2019s Opening Day roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see failure as failure. I see it as a opportunity to learn and you\u2019re either succeeding or you\u2019re learning from those opportunities,\u201d Lawlar said of going between the majors and minors. \u201cSo, I use it to hunger me, drive me and kind of light that fire again.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, it can be disappointing. We all want to be in the big leagues and help the team win and fight for some championships like we did in 2023. But it\u2019s all how you see it and it\u2019s your perspective on it.\u201d<\/p>\n
