{"id":535269,"date":"2026-03-14T05:29:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T05:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/535269\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T05:29:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T05:29:08","slug":"banksy-identity-named-robin-gunningham-david-jones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/535269\/","title":{"rendered":"Banksy Identity Named Robin Gunningham, David Jones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s in a name?<\/p>\n<p>Well, for world-famous artist Banksy, a pseudonym has been his way of staying anonymous throughout his three-decade career of graffiti-style art full of detailed human subjects and underlying political statements.<\/p>\n<p>However, his attorney is now speaking out after a lengthy investigative report published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/global-art-banksy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> March 13 identified him as Robin Gunningham, a Bristol-born man who changed his name to David Jones around 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Banksy\u2019s longtime lawyer Mark Stephens told the outlet the elusive creator \u201cdoes not accept that many of the details contained within your enquiry are correct\u201d after being presented with findings suggesting that he is Gunningham.<\/p>\n<p>Stephens also emphasized that Banksy\u2019s anonymity is crucial given that he has \u201cbeen subjected to fixated, threatening and extremist behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Working] anonymously or under a pseudonym serves vital societal interests,\u201d he added. \u201cIt protects freedom of expression by allowing creators to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation, censorship or persecution\u2014particularly when addressing sensitive issues such as politics, religion or social justice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What\u2019s in a name?
